I have heard what I believe is an error in the number of 2000 US M5's were made. On these boards the numbers seem to range 2000 to 2500, and yet each time a BMW sales or management person mentions it they say 1,400. Does anyone have any factory statistics on this they would like to share.

That's a pretty large discrepancy. I'm going with the dealers, that's about as official as
it can be at this time.

I don't know how many were shipped, but I do know that on Friday of last week there where 5 (five) E39 M5s in my company parking lot. They may have actually outnumbered the M3s.

The official number of cars sold thru 6/30/00 is 2,321. This is from BMWNA's press release of early July. We have easily passed the 2,500 mark by now.

I will post new numbers when they're released.

btw dealers lie all the time. They'll do or say anything to make that sale.

Information is power. Consider yourselves Mpowered. ;-)

I talked with the head of the M5 program in Spartanburg about the number of M5s shipped to the US. He said as of June 30 only 1200 +/- cars were shipped to the United States. I asked him about the 2000+ number I saw on this website and he said that is total cars produced worldwide. He also said the total number TO BE PRODUCED will never be publicized until the cars are actually made. He also would not say how many years they will make the E39 model. This info came directly from the BMW Performance Center.

I beg to differ. This is precisely the case of one large corporation where one hand does not know what the other is doing, or misinformed staff.

The press release clearly states US sales by BMW's 340 US dealers. Also details model by model sales. This information is released to the news media, and more importantly to Automotive News which keeps an extensive database of car sales & production in the US & worldwide.

Is this guy telling us that BMW NA has been releasing false information to the media...

Since 1975?

I don't think so.

Ah... my friend the 700 units sold betwen October & December 1999.

Do you guys remember Max Berger? I think he's probably one of the first to get his hands on the beast back in mid October 1999.

Max where are you!

Blue Max: Thanks for the reply and clarification. I will certainly ask this guy the next time I see him what exactly he means by 1200 units YTD. Although I believe your source, I still think there is more he is not telling me. But, I will definitely ask him next week and let you know. Could be interesting. Again thanks for the input.

Doh! Thanks Blue Max. I said it was early :)

The guy in Spartenburg may be talking about YTD #'s only. This makes the #'s line up better. But it was said before, dealers (and their reps) will tell you anything they can to sell more cars. I guess they feel like leaving information out isn't exactly lying :)
