folks,

I tried the 535d at the weekend. It was awesome - 0-60 was fast, but not M-car fast. The torque was amazing once underway. it made me think - how much longer until we get a diesel M car?

Audi showed the diesel R8

So how long until BMW follow suit ?

IMO they won't.

The R8 may have a diesel variant but thats a model, not a sports variant of a model.

Much in the same way the RS* is the equivalent Audi "motorsport" variant.

There won't be an RS* in a diesel version and i can't see there being an equivalent ///M either

The 335d is interesting as well. Lots of torque and it accelerates quickly. It does, however, have a fair amount of turbo lag and just feels more industrial than a 335i - let alone an M.

A 535d would make a great tow vehicle :)

There is more to an m car than acceleration. I think that turbo lag will limit the driving experience on twisties. This can probably be overcome, Audi seems to have with their race cars, but I do not how this would apply to a street car.
So I think it will be a few years till you see one.
