How long have people been waiting, that are still waiting, for their car in the U.S.?

I read with interest the thread on how long it took for people to get their new M5.....seems like the average was about 12 months (some were luckier!).

But, for those of us who are still waiting, I wonder how long you have been waiting. I got on the list at a medium size dealer in the Chicago area Nov '98 and my order has yet to be scheduled for build (although, the dealer tells me I'm next). The prioritization and status is mysterious and frustrating.

How long have you been waiting?

I got very lucky. I placed may order in 10/99 and got the car on 4/14/00.
Although it took me a year to get my M5, Jan. '99 'til Jan. '00, the car was not even available in the US until Sept. '99. I was initially number 10 at the dealer I bought it from, but 5 people cancelled their order so as not to get the car in the winter. I'm glad I got mine in the winter because it made taking it easy for the break-in a little more tolerable.
I ordered my M5 this past February. The dealer tells me that I will get a August build with a Sept. delivery.

Do you think it's possible to get the car in 6 months, or did the dealer just BS me to get the order? The dealer is Vista in Pompano Beach, FL.
I put my deposit down and got on the list in January. My dealer now tells me that I'm #3 on the list and expects a July build with a September delivery. I'm hoping to have it delivered to Spartenburg. Take the two day class and drive it back!

marlin, yes it is possible to get the car in six months. i only had to wait a few months. the only thing i would question is the august build. i've heard that bmw shuts down for vacation in august. good luck. you'll love the car when you do get it.

Marlin,

I would say the average wait is about a year but you can get lucky. I put my order in at the end of May 99 and got my car at the begining of April. Several factors go into how quickly you get your car: (i) the size of the delership - will affect the dealership's car allocation, and (ii) the attrition rate of people on the waiting list. I started off as #20 on the reservation list and I think i got the 10th or 12th car delivered at my dealership - Difeo.
I put my M5 deposit down in late February and was told I could expect to see it in November or December. Now, I'm told that I should have it in late July or early August! Of course, I'll believe it when the actual order is confirmed with BMW.
Bob,
did u place your order at a bay area dealership (e.g. allison, stevens creek, claridge's)?
I got on the list in December 1998. The dealer contacted me in December of 1999 for the actual color and interior choices. The car was built in January and delivered March 1. One year. Some are available aftermarket if the $$$ doesn't matter, about $15,000 over.
I ordered my car 1/99 received 12/22/99. I was #3 on the list at my dealer.

Ordered 12/99
Built week 13 (~3/20/2000)

Changed order for Euro delivery 2/2000, scheduled for 5/15. Moved it to June for spousal reasons.

Don't have the car yet but it's waiting, and so am I...
I went on the waiting list at a large NJ dealer 12/4/99 and was told I was #10 or 11 at the time. In early March I learned I had moved all the way up to #9(!) although I had been led to believe they would be getting at least 2 vehicles per month. One month later they said I was now #4, and four weeks ago they finally took my order specs. I haven't heard anything further but anticipate either July or August delivery.
Placed deposit to hold spot in line for 2001 model year March 18, 2000. Dealer contacted me beginning of May that he got an additional allocation of a 2000, my build date is week of June 26th. M5Mark, what dealer are you getting yours from. I'm getting mine from Ganley in Middleburg Hts.
I placed my order in Feb. I was promised a September delivery??? I'm skeptical.
jkleb, I ordered from BMW Cleveland in Solon but I was thinking of calling the other Cleveland area dealers as well. I've purchased all my Range Rovers (5) and BMWs (2) from them. They said 14-16 months. Maybe a smaller dealer would be (faster) better. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Placed deposit with Chicago area dealer 1/99. At that time #7. Now 16 months later I am #2. Called around last week and was quoted deliveries anywhere from 5/6 months to the 2003 model year.
Marlin....when I was looking for M5, I talked with 30+ dealers and was told by several that BMW is not telling dealers what month they will be getting delivery of M5's (evidently they have been told in the past). They are only told when they have a production slot which is 4 months in advance of delivery (e.g., in Feb., they would know that they have May production...so they give BMW the order specs., plus the forth month for transportation). If what I was told by those dealers is true, you have reason to be skeptical.
