I have a '98 528 Sport, a '94 Supra TT 6-speed, and an '00 Honda S2000.

If you have or have driven both the Supra TT and the M5, how do they compare? Similar? Different? What should I expect?

i don't think you can quite compare toyota to bmw or supra to m5 for that matter.

I think you can compare them. Both were relatively overweight. Both had more horsepower and better handling then their competitors. Both combined a combination of performance and luxury unique in their class (with the exception of the E55/XJR for the M5 and the 300ZX TT/RX7 TT for the Supra). And lastly, their overall performance is similar. Supra's have been clocked at 13.5-13.9 1/4 miles at 105-107, M5s at [email protected] Yes the M5 is faster, but not by much. Both are limited to 155 and have similarly sized and aggressive tires and handling/braking limits.

The Supra even has some superior pieces. Brakes have fixed 4 piston front calipers and fixed 2 piston rear calipers. Tires are the very aggressive, 140 wear rating, Michelin MXX3s. And the shifter on the Getrag 6-speed is crisper than an BMW (3, 5, or Z) series I have been in.

I already have my M5 on order. If I keep the Supra it will be as a momento. It was my 40th birthday present. When we go to car shows (with my wife's '38 Buick) many people have cars they have owned for 30 years. We are considering keeping the Supra for that reason. It was the best of its type (300ZX TT, Corvette, 911, 348) of its day and still has a devoted and rather large following (I got 50 purchase offers, many desperate, when I listed it last year).

Car & Driver once tested a Supra TT 0-60 in 4.6 secs and 13.1 @ 110 mph in the 1/4 mile. I believe that it was in late 1993. In all subsequent tests C&D couldn't duplicate the performance of the first test car.

In what publication did an M5 do a 13.1 @110 mph? I would be very interested in seeing that test. Was it a test in the British publication 'EVO'?

I actually have a little older Supra ('89) and I have to agree with you. It has been a great car. I have had it on the track a number of times and it does quite well. I plan to keep it around as an extra car. I may even make it into more of a real track car if I can find the time.

The M5 would not have been an option for me financially even it had existed in '89. I also would have had no interest in a four door car at that time in my life, regardless of the performance. I am now fortunate enough to have the M5 as an option at a time in my life where a four door car is the right thing for me.

It gets very tiring seeing all the trashing of other very good cars on this MB. The need to trash other things to make one's choices appear best is something I have never understood, even when I was younger.

I have kept quiet on this subject up until now, sometimes with great difficulty. To me is just shows a lack of self confidence and self esteem and a need to have "things" make up for that.

Something interesting to note is that this appears to be much more of an American thing. have not sensed much of this behavior in the postings coming from our European and Australian friends.

KEEP THE SUPRA

Stock M5 definitely drives better, a lot faster and handles better that the Stock Supra....I know this cause I own both....

It is alot easier to handle a drift in a M5 than in the supra cause the supra is more tail happy...

But the Supra has better gear box cause it is shorter than the M5...

I suggest you give the Supra a little modification and you'll love it even more...

Supra definitely feel different than the M5 BOTH are fun to drive...The Supra is pure sport car ( I think it is not luxury at all compared to the M5)while M5 is the best compromise of Luxury and Sport...

P.S: I get alot of tickets in the Supra, None in the M5 and I drive fast all the time

13.1 @ 110 from a stock Supra TT in C&D - Dream on. From C&D roadtest summaries.

Summary issue test date 60/Qtr mile
4/94 9/93 5.2/13.8
5/98 8/97 5.0/13.6

No speed in the summary, but It was not 110 in C&D.

Apparently I was wrong about 2 things in regard to the Supra TT. I am now at home and looking at the article. 1) The Road Test I spoke of was actually in the March 1993 issue. 2) The 1/4 mile was actually 13.1 @109mph.

Please forgive me for my two errors. Apparently...I must have been "dreaming".

Can you tell that I really didn't appreciate your comment...and that I may need to spell out my sarcasm.

Relax bit, The 9/93 test (5.2/13.8) could have been an Automatic and the 8/97 model tested (5.0/13.6) would have been an OBDC II car. You don't say anything about them.

C&D has printed great numbers on early production cars that were not quite reproduced is subsequent tests. E55 comes to mind and if I recall there was one C5 Corvette tested that stood out from some of the others. I sometimes wonder if they get tweeked cars.

Actually, I put more faith in sveilside's post as to which car is faster. He has both and has provided many excellent, and I think, unbiased posts.

There are many problems with picking out the truly faster car when the numbers are close on paper.

Cheers

Sounds like they are similar. Similar speed. M5 sounds a little less edgy, at some loss in responsiveness. And that the Supra's shifter is better.

Actually, this almost seems to be a never ending slide into worse shifters. '86 MR2 to '91 MR2 to '94 Supra TT to M5. Actually, I got an S2000 before the M5 (which I don't have yet), but until about 3k miles, the Supra's shifter was better.

I'll make another post about the shifter.

Personally I do not see how you can compare the two cars. The Supra is essentially a 2 seater coupe like the 911, excuse me 993/996, while the M5 is true 4/5 seat sedan with incredible luxury and practicality. The fact that they have similiar performance numbers is quite a tribute to BMW engineering, but these cars would never be cross shopped. They both offer unique features and styles. I would say Supra, Vette, 996, 300ZX. On the other side: M5, E55, GS400, XJR. You could just as easily compare the M5 to a C5 and of course there are mega threads on this, but what is the point, other than some interesting debates and of course it is a free country, so far. I was looking for a 4 door sedan with performance very close to a "sports car" and that pretty well eliminates cars with two doors and pseudo rear seats. In fact, I went ahead a bought an E30 M3 for driving schools, autox and eventually club racing.

Hi Shawn,

You're right. I was just being grumpy this morning. The members of this board are pretty good about not constantly trashing other cars.

I had been catching up with the M5(E39) message board at bimmer.org earlier and wound up wading through a bunch of useless flame messages. Actually, it looked like a group from a Supra message board had invaded. I was about a month behind on that board and I think that was still on my mind when I switched over to this MB.

My apologies.

I know where you're coming from. I haven't looked at that silly bimmer.org board since those Supra/M5 thread wars...what a waste of time and energy that was.

Have always been really tempted to pick up a TT and tune the beJezuz out of it. I was murdered by a modified one when I had a supercharged Mustang GT.
