I've been trying to track down this super-charger like whine for a while now. I don't know if it's been getting louder, or I am just more paranoid about odd noises from my beast. ??????

I was hoping it was the alternator, as the voltage does fluctuate some with RPM, and sometimes at idle the lights will dim, however, once I disconnected all belts, the whine actually seemed to get louder and more metallic.

Roadmap of the soundclip:
Wife is revving gently to up to ~2,5-3k RPM
1- Phone held in middle of engine bay.
1- Bank 1 (my noisier VANOS unit)
2- Bank 2
3- Under the car. Seems loudest at/near crank shaft.

I saw some threads where folks were also complaining of super-charger like whine. I've also heard it in a lot of unrelated S62 videos.
So, chain guides? Something random? I'm waiting on a lower oil-pan gasket so that I can pull that this week when I change my oil to look for plastic bits. I'm scared. Be gentle.

Shoot! Completely forgot to mention that I had both belts *off* during the recording.
99k mi on car.
I have also had a "clack" when I jab the throttle off idle since I've owned it... so I've always been suspicious of my chain guides.

Why would his chain guides fail at that mileage?
Maintenance neglect by previous owners?
