H&R or dinan springs w/o upgrading struts/shocks?

I have recently been warned the dangers of putting stiffer springs to OEM shocks as it could lead to wearing the shock out at a quick rate(Ie 10-15k miles). I know everyone wants to keep EDC control and i have not seen aftermarket shocks other then full coilovers.

I'm just wondering how dinan is releasing springs and H&R without addressing this. I don't pretend to know what i'm talking about and may have some terms wrong.

Any opinions, advice, or knowledge would be great. I was just given H&R springs and was planning on getting 19' Neez QD7's and put 10mm all around spacers on to give my m5 a more aggressive look however I don't want to sacrifice suspension performance just for the better wheel well look.

Thanks again.

I had H&R spring before switch to KWv3. To be honest, KWv3 ride much better than any setting on EDC with aftermarket spring (at least I have driven H&R, Eibach, and Dinan). Get KW and you will forget about EDC feature.

*Supposedly* Dinan matched their spring rates to work well with the OEM Shocks and Struts. And it is supposed to work very well with EDC Normal. Mismatched spring rates and struts can cause problems, as the bump and rebound valving on the shock is not optimal for a stiffer spring rate, which will lessen the dampening effects of the shocks, especially on rough pavement and track type situations.

With that being said, I've been running H&R's for a while now. No problems here. No excessive bouncing on rough roads, no problems on the track as far as predictablility and transitions. Handles better than stock for sure, as I've run with OEM and H&R.

I never understood the theory that lower/stiffer springs caused premature shock failure. Shock failure is caused by heat which is caused by excessive rapid travel... imagine a shock trying to control a really bouncy spring... obviously that presents more work and it will wear out faster than a spring that barely moves!?!?. Stiffer springs actually reduce shock movement so logically shocks should last longer with lower/stiffer springs. If someone has a logical explanation as to why stiffer/lower springs wear out shocks faster, I'd really like to hear it.

The last two vehicles I've owned have had aftermarket springs with stock shocks and I put over 100k Miles on both of them without ever having to replace the shocks.

I wouldn't worry about it. I bet very few people here who've done this have not had issues with shock absorber failure.

The most recent Dinan setup uses new upper spring mounts to maintain most of the stock suspension travel, while still lowering the ride height. The reviews of the Dinan S3 cars with this setup have been very positive :M5thumbs:

If you are getting custom wheels, buy the correct offset rather than adding spacers :lightbulb:

Wish i could, I wanna get 19' qd7 neez and it seems the offset works without spacers but does come up a bit short. so 10mm puts the wheels in the right spot.
