Hey Everyone,

Here is the Performance Technic (Performance Technic) rod bearing group buy that many of you have been waiting for. This is catered more for those who reside in Northern California. PTech recently finished up changing out my rod bearings and you can read about it in a brief article I wrote for them here S85 Rod Bearings - Performance Technic

If you aren't familiar with PTech, they specialize in BMW work, and recently added Porsches, and are renowned in the Bay Area as being one of the premier BMW indy shops. Many of the local M5board members are their customers and PTech is always increasing their capabilities with challenging projects. In the past year they have built up the famous 1M3 Clone (135i converted aesthetically to a 1M and then swapped out the engine for a S65 V8) and also won the USTCC Championship with their own shop built e46 M3 racecar. They employ BMW Master Technicians and use BMW factory tools ensuring that each job is done correctly to factory standards. Their attention to detail and workmanship is incredible. They're also a Dinan authorized dealer/installer. Their level of professionalism and knowledge of BMWs allows me to trust them to perform any sort of job on my car.

This group buy uses WPC treated rod bearings (the newer 702/703 OEM bearings which are WPC treated. Can read more about the details and benefits of the treatment here WPC - Metal Surface Treatment / Micro Shot Peening) and ARP connecting rod bolts.

Below are the various packages that PTech will be offering for this group buy. All packages are OTD prices and include labor, oil change, and all associated hardware (i.e. gaskets, o-rings, one-time use bolts, etc.)

Tier 1: WPC treated rod bearings and ARP bolts only - $3600
Tier 2: Tier 1 + VANOS high pressure line - $3950
Tier 3: Tier 2 + engine mounts - $4200

Additionally, header installs can be added to any Tier package for an additional $550 (that's labor + associated hardware like gaskets). And of course, other job requests can be piggybacked on top of any package.

I personally got Tier 3. Car is already opened up, why not get a refresh of everything in that area?

This group buy is good until the end of February 2015 (think of it as like a Winter group buy). How it works is PTech just needs commitment from the minimum 3 buyers with a $1000 deposit and then the prices are locked in for those customers (and additional customers interested after the minimum number is hit). Appointments will be made to cater to the customer's schedule, hence the $1000 deposit to lock in the spot. So you don't have to get the job done before the end of February, just have to give a deposit by then in order to lock in these pricings.

Albeit, this isn't a cheap job, but IMO it's better to be safe than sorry. Recently there have been threads popping up left and right of people having spun/failed rod bearings and needing to call up Troy for a new engine. We all know that the 088/089 rod bearings which came in all our cars have clearance issues and that BMW tried to address this with the new 702/703 bearings. Unfortunately, the 702/703 bearings weren't released until after the production of our S85 beasts expired. In my book, peace of mind trumps all and I'm very happy to have gotten my rod bearings changed knowing that I shouldn't have to worry about a spun rod bearing for the next x-number of years.

As a price comparison, I know one of the other premier BMW indy shops in the Bay Area charges $4000 just for a Tier 1 equivalent package (not including tax).

Unfortunately for the out-of-towners, PTech can't offer a WPC rod bearing/ARP bolts shipped package at this time.

E-mail [email protected] with any questions or if interested in securing a slot for this group buy!

I'm glad I got mine done 24,000 miles ago -- before any catastrophic failure.

For the price of some bling wheels, you can get some peace of mind!

Good Job Randy!

Thanks for constantly remind me that the price of a rod bearing job is <<< price of a new engine. I am very happy to have peace of mind.

I will be starting a thread soon once I get all the pics of my job from PTech. Blackstone Labs report just came in of my oil sample right before the rod bearing job. I'm hoping my 3 BS reports in comparison to my bearing wear will be a good datapoint for this forum in trying to correlate BS reports to potential rod bearing wear conditions.

Joint or not to joint the out of owner group buy is the question. My car only has 36k miles and at the rate I am driving it, it will take another 3 to 4 years to reach 50k. Or just do it sooner. Hmmm.

Just FYI that the local minimum would buyers count would have to be met before even considering an out-of-towners package is possible.

So much interest for people who are out of town...but we can't even consider having an out-of-towner's package until some locals sign up!

Where are the locals at??

I am teetering on the fence Randy, I'm at just south of 50k, having put 5k on it in a year...We're in the process of buying a business so I am watching my coin pretty closely: Really appreciate the knowledge you've imparted, I need to get my BSR's out and do a bit of studying and comparison.

Cheers

We're in the process of buying a business that's out at the edge for us, so I am watching my coin pretty closely. Really appreciate the knowledge you've imparted, I need to get my BSR's out and do a bit of studying and comparison. I do plan to keep this nice example of the breed for a bit so i want to make the right move.

Hey Randy, thanks for setting up these group buy! Btw I'm curious to what your role is!? Do you work at this Indy shop?

And did they adjust their price recently? Because last month or so they quoted me $3200.00 to do the complete job using WPC bearings and arp bolts.

No worries, Steve. You have a little over 2 months to figure out if you want to jump on this deal. The thing that's scary is that it doesn't really even matter what mileage...my friend Calvin (local), spun a rod bearing at 37k miles on his e63 M6...luckily he was still under CPO and BMW NA finally agreed to give him a brand new engine. Just goes to show that even low mileage cars are prone to this issue. It's not necessarily mileage driven, but more so many other variables like driving/warm-up style. Just having higher mileage I feel has a higher chance of worn bearings, obviously.

Haha no, I do not work for PTech. I'm just one of their customers and throughout the years, the owner and I have gotten to know each other pretty well and he really wants to help out the M5 community so recently we've been trying to setup GB's catered towards M5/6s.

$3200...really?? I've been talking to the owner for awhile about rod bearings for my car and I have never gotten a quote from him for that low. Do you remember who it was that quoted you that?

After doing the job on my car, they found that there were quite a few extra one-time-use bolts and what not so they adjusted the price accordingly. It's quite more labor intensive than the S65 cars as well.

For the S65 cars, they charge $3k OTD so I think $3600 for the S85 is priced accordingly, seeing that in parts alone you will be paying an extra $300 or so due the extra two piston rods.

"also as Jcolley said I told them I should do the crush rings/gaskets for power steering and the vanos accumulator(I'm assuming this is the vanos line)"
Most of the items in that list are covered in Tier4, except for

-alternator belt
-ac belt
-not sure about chain tensioner, compression spring, or spring pocket.

but everything else on the list is included for Tier4 like the crush rings. I confirmed that with PTech before they did the work on my car.

It was Ernesto, he quoted $3,200 with wpc Coated and arp. And yeah it is for an s85.

Ah...well I'm sorry to hear he mis-quoted you on that. It just doesn't add up that the S85 job would only be $200 more expensive than the S65 when parts alone are at least $300 more and it's more labor intensive.

I am interested, however I am at 45k miles with not signs of extreme wear (no glitter in the oil) and I have an extended warranty for another 10 months. The car only has had less than 5k miles put on it in the last 2-3 years by the p/o and I am very meticulous about my start up and shut down routine when driving the car (not to mention that it is just a weekend car for me).

I guess I'm just debating on whether or not to risk it until warranty runs out or go for it in the near future.

I wonder if there is a way for a shop to evaluate the need for the bearings and have them replaced under warranty prior to failure....

I know PTech does have some experience with working with aftermarket warranties. E-mail [email protected] to see if they can get your warranty to cover some, if not all, of the job.
