Just over a week after my excitable "Transmission specialist" post it has become obvious, at least before any rebuilding was done, that my gearbox cannot be repaired.

It was howling like a dog cut job in all gears bar 4th, which suggested bearings or other, but did not even hint at the actual crippling problem - major pitting on the input gears so severe the teeth will fall off fairly soon. One of these two gears is literally irreplacable now, in spite of my transmission company's initial confidence, obvious capabilities, and in spite of their history of fixing Getrag 280s on Aston Martins. The fella sounded really depressed he couldn't do anything, not least because he'd left my car on a ramp for the best part of a week at his mate's garage.

His experiences sounded quite unpleasant - he'd been quoted £2k for a second hand box. The vendor knew he had him over a barrel and was telling him how these boxes "are hen's teeth mate".

Having genuinely exhausted all options, and not fancying the secondhand box I heard of at £700 I've ordered OEM at just under £2k exchange - which is actually reasonable/good value from BMW! A new gearbox will last me at least ten years, longer with frequent lube changes, (and even BMW were quoting around £15 for the ATF).

At present the box is cheaper in the UK than Germany!

I would still recommend Midlands Transmission on account of their transparency, and if the problem is something else you may get away with a quick fix, but please do not go down the "£450 for bearings mate" at any old company option.

I hope any noisy gearboxes out there stay noisy for many a mile, but mine was due to go bang very soon.

All the best, Anwar

Well, mine's staying closed until it stops the car from moving - then I'll get a BMW one (only for the warranty of course).

That was post traumatic stress disorder three years after the event! I had a very good solicitor in court...

Very glad to have amused you in return for your immense generosity. If i recover from this financial trauma it'll be suspension soon...

Yeah I think that is what happened to mine -- it was whining in all gears except fourth and then one day on a slight uphill in 5th gear, going about 90mph, it busted.

I can turn the input shaft on the box and there is just a bunch of crunching and the output shafts moves ever so slightly. lol It is still in my garage for nostalgia.
