Bell housing might be , but the gearbox lengths are different for a start ......... so it's not a straightforward swap !

There is more , but hopefully that's enough for now !

That's not to say that a flexible , fun loving , enthusiast , similar to the mad professor in Back To The Future , couldn't make the whole idea work !

This is taken from BMWMregistry FAQ..........

What kind of gearbox does the E28 M5 have?

All E28 M5s have the Getrag 280/5 five-speed manual gearbox. Gear ratios are as follows: 3.51 (1), 2.08 (2), 1.35 (3), 1.00 (4), .81 (5). A 3.73:1 final drive is fitted to all but the North American E28 M5, which uses a 3.91:1 rear end. All have limited slip differentials with a maximum locking of 25 percent.

What kind of gearbox does the E34 M5 have?
All M5s built before May of 1994 utilize a Getrag 280/5 five-speed manual gearbox with the following ratios: 3.51 (1), 2.08 (2), 1.35 (3), 1.00 (4), 0.81 (5). This was mated to a 3.91:1 final drive on all five-speed M5s with the exception of North American-spec examples built after July of 1991, which have a taller 3.73:1 final drive for better fuel economy.

I think they are TOTALLY the same 280 gearbox

Ok,, so in real life the E28 G280 gearbox is shorter vs E34 G280
Yes , I know , because I had to drive an E34 M5 Getrag 280/5 down to my gearbox builder's premises , over 100 miles away , after initially mistakenly supplying an E28 M5 Getrag 280/5 that he attempted to fit to a customer's E34 M5 unsuccessfully , for the reasons mentioned above.

IIRC there is also an issue with the crank speed pick up on the E28 box .

You may be able to get away with a Getrag 260 from an E34 535i ( M30 Engine ) , although I've never fitted one personally to confidently confirm .

so which box is a direct replacement for the e34 is the e30 m3 a directfit
The G260/6 ((M30)) is a direct fit but the shaft is not long enough,, i think

the G265/5 dogleg box is also the same bolt pattern ,, but the sensor is located there as in E28 M5 gearbox the shaft is also not long enough
