The cam gears are not "smog approved", but the car was still super clean at my recent smog test:
Stan: Like you, I had to take my '00 M5 in recently for a smog inspection in California. The smog laws here are some of the most rigorous in the nation, and we're proud of that. Having imported the car from the southeast, however, I wondered whether it would pass muster. I was particularly concerned because of all the mods on my car: Dinan CAI, high-flow air mass meters, Dinan exhaust, Dinan engine software, etc.

I shouldn't have been concerned. My car passed the tough California smog test with flying colors. None of the figures was even close to the limits. Apparently Dinan is true to its word that most of its mods don't affect the emissions of the car. It probably helps that Dinan is a California-based company, so they're used to tough smog tests.
