Realized I had the old Peake code reader for the M5 sitting in my glove compartment. I was using on a 2001 M5, should work on all models up to 2003. I don't have the exact model # in front of me. Will come with case and manual.

I used this on a 2001 M5 just fine. It connects under the dashboard. I can upload a picture of the connector if you want so you can verify it'll fit. I found this thread and I guess the unit I ordered included the OBDII adapter so it will still work on MY's past 2000 as it did with mine:
