ok so my front tires on my e39 are about to be replaced because the handling just isnt as good as they used to be, their catching a lot. They are ps2´s and they´ve lasted about 12k miles. I am wanting to know what is the biggest tire that I can put on the stock 8 inch front rims?
I am sorry if this question has been asked before.

What do you mean by "catching a lot"?

You generally don't want to put tires that are too large for your rims as this does not increase the contact patch. Stay with the 245s or buy buy a set of rears for the front and run 285s.

When I go over uneven pavement the car seems to want to go to the sides.
Won't the bigger tire size improve the handling a bit?

Yes, it will help a lot. However, you need to mount them on a properly sized wheel. You do not gain anything from mounting a 275 wheel meant for a 9.5" width wheel on a 8.5" wheel.

If you want to run wider front tires, you need to run wider wheels also.

Your choice of tire is also important if your car is pulling with the grooves in the road, not necessarily tire width.
