Front caliper rebuild kit options

Back around May of last year I rebuilt my front calipers. The BMW kit runs about $60-80 per caliper. On the other hand rockauto sells generics for about $5 per piston = $10 per caliper. Looking at application tables show the kits apply to multiple cars from multiple manufacturers. Nothing special about our brakes - as long as piston size matches brake seals are pretty much standard.

So I ordered three brands from Rockauto: ACdelco, Raybestos and Centric. From memory the acdelco or raybestos piston boots tore as I was just installing them. The other (acdelco or raybestos) boots are cooked a year later see pic below. Granted this is with track use and DTC60 pads; they'd prob be fine with street driving. The centrics however look like new. The centric piston boots are light grey in color which made me question them initially but a year later I was proven wrong. Unfortunately rockauto does not sell centrics anymore / maybe centric stopped supplying them. I see they're still listed on centrics catalog as 143.34021.

I bought a set of Carlson boots from rockauto in July, haven't fitted them yet. Guess I'll be a further guinea pig for that kit. Haven't even opened the bag to see color but pictures show black, and at $5 a kit I'll not hold my breath.

Great info and thanks for sharing, I like your natural inquisition to root out good aftermarket parts...for no reason beyond interest and sharing. I see on a lot of parts/aftermarket sites the offering of brass pin-sleeves for caliper rebuilds that market less deflection and a better feel - anyone have experience with these? Worth their weight, or like the brass clutch-pivot pins, good thought but bad in real-world application?
