Hi all fellow Kiwi E39 M5 owners.

I am the proud owner of PaulMR's ex-Silverstone Blue M5 & am looking to make some moderate improvements. The car is in excellent condition & has been well looked after by the previous owners & I am absolutely smitten by it's addictive personality.

I have posted a thread on the M5board forum (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/195942-my-new-m5.html#post2177449), but I am also looking to meet in person other fellow Kiwi M5 owners in the near future to discuss & experience their own modifications, particularly pertaining to the exhaust, suspension, brakes, engine ECU chipping etc.

Let me know if the idea of a get together interests you & if so, we can set a date sometime in the near future. We could chew the fat about M5's & cars in general, our respective businesses/jobs/careers/walks of life (I always find this fascinating) & more importantly, if so willing, set up a M5 tour around some scenic part of NZ.

I am based in Auckland, so could initially meet up with some fellow Aucklander's & thereafter, extend that to other parts of NZ in due course (sounding like a true Jaffa after only 6 years here!).

Anyway, nuff said for now, let me know what you think & if there is enough interest, we can set things in motion.

In the interim, I have also sent out a number of 'befriend' requests to Kiwi M5 owners to get things moving.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi KiwiM5 and welcome to the board.

I also have an E39 M5. Mine is Avus Blue (yours is Silverstone).

I don't think there are many other NZ members on here.

My car is mechanically stock but I have retrofitted Bluetooth, Nav, Reverse Camera and also fitted the later 16:9 monitor and video module and upgraded the radio module.

I had a look at your car when it was for sale at Tradin Post before the last owner purchased it - a couple of years ago.

I see by your other post that you are looking at a few performance mods. Please let me know how you get on with your exhaust.

Cheers

Matt

Hi Matt,

Good to hear from a fellow Kiwi M5 owner. I understand that there were only ~15 other E39 M5's sold &/or brought into NZ, so quite a rare breed. BTW, I have amended my profile - I was working on a Avus Blue M5 but which fell through & then secured the silverstone blue, which is also quite nice. Truth be told, I really don't care about the colour, it is just great to have an M5.

I would be interested in finding out from you how you did the bluetooth & Nav. I have an iPhone 4G which I previously had set up in my SVX (just sold yesterday!) & I already miss the convenience of hands free talking. I would dearly love to be able to play my iTunes on my iPhone through the BMW sound system too.

The Nav would also be a welcome addition for finding those HTF spots in Auckland & about.

In just passing by, I see that Tradin Post is now located in Greenlane adjacent to the Greenlane off ramp. They will get good exposure in this spot.

The first change on the books is the muffler delete + Timmay's tips. This should be completed sometime mid-late November or soon after the tips arrive. Another fellow M5 is having the same done done, but already has the cats deleted. It will be interesting to see how it sounds with both delete's & if all good, i will do the same. Thereafter I may pursue an ECU tune at Torque Performance in Avondale who reckons there is increase of ~20 hp using 98 RON fuel & possibly the same in torque. I need to find out more about the power & torque is produced to see if it is worthwhile. Brakes & better airflow are another area I am interested in as well as suspension improvements. The ECU tune, brakes & suspension will all be addressed over the next 1-2 years as I need to do a lot of research to make sure any changes made are right first time.

Hi Todd and Matt,

Good to see there are other Kiwi's on the Board! I didn't realise there where only ~15 cars imported from new. Kind of makes them even more special here. Mine is an early Avus Blue which I've kept stock standard too. Recently installed a reversing camera and will look into IPOD/IPHONE connectivity down the track.

Other than that, it is a true wolf in sheep's clothing. Perhaps at times a little too quiet for my liking. I'm also interested in the rear muffler delete, so let me know how you get on. I've approached a couple of workshops and they appear hesitant. Guess I need to find the right one.

Interestingly Todd, I pawed over your vehicle when it was for sale in Tradin Post a few years back. Beauty!

Cheers,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

Hey, another Kiwi M5 owner active on this forum. Excellent. It will be good to view your Avus Blue M5 & see what was involved in the reversing camera installation (same as Matt) & how easy it is to do & who did the work.

The sheep in wolf's clothing is spot on, but like you I won't just a little more emotion from the exhaust when in the mood, but otherwise quiet for general runabout & cruising. The muffler delete seems to hit the mark (very affordable & simple to achieve). When complete (sometime in mid-Nov after Timmay's tips arrive) I will be sure to let you when it is done & we can get together with Matt & any other M5 owners to experience the result first hand. P.S. The work will likely be done by Woolf's mufflers.

Tis a small world when it comes to these cars. Tradin Post is now located in Greenlane, adjacent to the Greenlane off ramp. Also, today whilst in Ohope visiting an old friend one of his neighbours that he had not previously met popped over to inquire about the car. At it transpires he was looking at this same car when it was for sale by Archibald Barr & was stoked when it appeared a couple of doors down. He was slow to act & gutted when it was delisted, but he did enjoyed a short blast & really loved the car & it's condition. He is possibly still in the market for another M5, although when his wife popped over, she did the eye rolling thing showing he still has some work to do to convince of the merits of this car. Tis a small world indeed.

Hi Guys,

Well, Timmays tips arrived yesterday & installed today by Woolf mufflers in conjunction with the muffler delete. So, what do I think?

Timmays tips are excellent. They are slightly larger, but not boy racer-ish & all the better for it. Excellent workmanship too. Well worth the money. The Kiwi M5 script looks awesome, but is not so obvious as to look like I am pimping the car.

Onto the muffler delete. T'was quite a job getting everything lined up & but Jason brought it all together in the end. Total time was ~2 hrs & only $200. Good value. As to the sound the car now makes, here is my opinion after 2 separate decent drives around town & the motorway:

Up to 2000rpm, it sounds like a cross between a old style Subaru flat four throb & a lumpy V8 & in a good way.
At about 2200-2400, there is a higher pitch crossover note which is semi-drony but only if you sat at those revs. From about 2500rpm, the V8 sound really starts to come out & sound something like a cross between a NASCAR V8 & the Chevy V8's. Very very addictive.
As described, the exhaust character changes across the whole range, but with the standard mufflers, it is pretty much the same, just different in volume.
At a constant 100km/hr the exhaust volume is only mildly louder, but in a nice way & not really noticeable. Just as you pick up speed, you get that higher pitch crossover sound for a moment & then the V8 sound comes through & it is really quite something.

I am looking to take a trip to Hamilton this weekend & see if it this new exhaust character grows on me or, if after 200+km, the novelty wears off at which point I will simply put the original mufflers back on.

The other change I am look at is a ECU tune by Torque Performance. I have been advised that their are gains of 15kw & 20nm. I am waiting for the before & after maps before considering making this change. It will either be this or the Evolve Alpha N MAF-less tune. They are both about the same price. I am still to make up my mind on whether I want or even need the extra power. I won't be taking the car on the track & I already find it hard enough to stay within the legal limits as it is.

Other than that, all is being kept stock & that includes new front discs, new shocks & tyres all round & a few minor mechanical & cosmetic tidying before Xmas. That should see just regular maintenance for the next 1-3 years. IMHO, I think BMW pretty much got this car just right.

I even took a 02 Porsche 996 twin turbo & an 08 Nissan GTR for a test drive this week to see what sports car I could get that would eclipse the M5. The Porsche was a disappointment, primarily because the combination of the auto & the turbo lag conspired to be a foot down, wait for hit, whoosh, now we are away. That is no good after a torquey NA V8 (a manual version might be better). The GTR was simply amazingly faster in every possible way. It does things a car shouldn't be able to do. Problem is the oragami styling, the badge & the Japanese script on the control screen (was an import). I couldn't bring myself to pay out ~$100k for this car, not matter how fast it is. Bloody amazing car to drive though - everybody should have some behind the wheel to at least get a benchmark of what fast & amazing handling can really be like.

BTW, I have a Valentine 1 radar detector on the way from the USA via a friend in Georgia. It cost me less than most of the secondhand units selling on Trade Me & that are 2-5+ yrs old. Don't let others foll you into believing that the 'NZ' units are especially tuned & require some sort of super knowledge to tune. It is a simple matter of deleting the K band option. Yes, it really is that simple. Better than paying ~NZ$1,000 for a 'NZ' tuned unit.

Finally, the only other issue I currently have is water/condensation in the drivers side headlight. I have used the hair dryer several times, but is always comes back. I thought the O-ring for the headlight adjuster was the problem so was replaced. I have checked the drains & they are OK too. Looking at all the other comments, it would seem that the rubber that sits between the lens & the headlight unit may have perished. I will pull this apart & try to reseal it or buy a new rubber altogether.

Looks like my n500 might be joining the nz contingent some time during March next year.
Now that will be something to check out. Have you had the n500 independently tested to verify the hp claims. There is quite a lot of banter around nowack on this & other forums.

Kiwi, ive seen the insides of this engine during a complete rebuild and theres no doubt Nowack went to some trouble putting it together. After it was run-in i had it custom mapped at Evolve on there dyno, they dont mickey mouse there numbers. Pre the rebuild with the original Nowack tune it was making around 450 bhp, after the rebuild and with the Evolve tune its making around 480 bhp. Later while on the way to the nurburgring and while driving there it is making honest power when run against a wide variety of big bhp cars :) at least in a straight line, i was too conservative in the corners!

Good to hear that you have an Evolve verified 480hp. That must be quite something. Taming it on NZ roads will no doubt be fun, esp. with such aggressive traffic/speed policing these days. I look forward to see this car in the flesh when it lands downunder.

I will definitely miss the motorway network in the UK, have twice before received a ban in NZ - ive seen the magistrates over here on several occasions as well.. But here is a strange thing, i think the m5 is an easier car to drive slowly than an m3 - it dosent need to be reved as much and the burble from the exhaust is satisfying when short shifting. I hope it will squeeze through emissions(!)

Am aiming to see the car back in NZ by about mid March of next year.. we shall see what happens then with respect to emissions, i might need to put some stock cats back in there.

Muffler Delete demo

I would be pretty interested to meet in person and hearing your muffler delete at some time...
I live in Auckland, so if you do also, let me know what day/time suits & we can see if we can work something out.

Your Nowack is one car that me & other M5 owners will most definitely want to see & experience.

With regards to importation, I may need to be corrected, but I beleive that if you have owned the car for longer than 6 months you won't have to concern yourself with emissions, GST. Best to double check though.

Mmmm... I know im exempt from GST as a private import and being a returning Kiwi, im just not sure about how hard they look at emissions and noise, I might have to ask the Evolve team to turn the cold start off after all(!) Whatever happens im looking forward to having the beast back there and linking up, especially as they are a rare machine downunder.

The devil is always in the detail, so yeah, best to play it safe.

Where I live in Auckland (Greenlane) I have seen an Avus Blue & a Carbon Black M5. I also know of another Avus Blue & Anthracite M5, so that is 5 already with less than 20 altogether in NZ. Obviously none will be anything like your Nowack, so when you do bring it in, there'll be a few of showing showing an interest in this unique M5.

I still cant get over there being less than 20! I mean they are not exactly common over here but you still see a few. Seems like greenlane is NZ m5 central!

Yep, not many at all, which makes it that much more special. Although I have seen 2 around Greenlane, I do get around Auckland a bit, but I know there are more, hence the original request for other interested M5 owners to get together, chin wag, inspect each other beasts, identify changes/improvements etc that have been done, by whom, for how much, advantages/disadvantages, maybe even ask for first option on future buying etc. Good opportunity to further extend each others networks too.
