Having had my new M5 a couple of weeks I have noticed the gear stick/knob feels quite flimsy, there is quite a bit of play when twisting the knob. Having compared it to several other manual cars my feeling were confirmed. The Gear knob is not loose. Has anyone else noticed this or have I got a problem. (The gear change is fine)

Something isn't right. Mine has no play in the "twist" dimension.

Mine doesn't, either. I didn't torque it a lot, though, since I heard that the shifter knob is held on by an o-ring (and not a bolt or screw).

Make sure it's pushed on tightly. A few people on this board, and on bimmer.org, have reported the shifter knob coming off in their hands. As I understand it, it's literally jammed on there, with no set screw or other device holding it in place on the shift lever. I haven't had any problems with my M5's shifter.
