Hey guys,

Well today is my birthday and since completing my half day at work things were going great. Then the revenue generators in blue, cough cough, I mean state trooper decided to pull me over for an apparent speeding ticket. He "says" he got my doing 45 mph turning onto the road before slowing down. I guess the new speed limit on that road is 30, it used to be 40 or 45. AND I told him I just got the car and was still getting used to shifting into the right gear to hold a steady speed. (total bull**** on my part) He obviously didnt care about any of that as he wrote me up for exactly what he said he got me at.

If I was cruising down the road at 45 and knew it was 30 then shame on me, but turning onto a road (its close to being a "Y" type split of the road) and easing down to 38-40 is a pretty shabby unprofessional way to give out a ticket.

Also, I'm sure he was sitting somewhere as I didnt see him until looking in the mirror coming up to a stop sign.

Anyone else want to share their first M5 speeding ticket story?

P.S.> I've never been pulled over for speeding in the seven years I've been driving. (Its not a super long time but hey I made it through the teens and early 20's without one!)

My first ticket in the M5 was pretty crazy.

I was sitting at a 4 way intersection at a light. My friends were in a car next to me, and we were making a left hand turn. I asked if there was any cops around, of course they said no :3:
When the light turned green I dumped the clutch at probably 4-5k rpms and held a drift all the way through the intersection ( Stupid of me I know.) Sure enough a cop was coming up about 3 cars behind me when the light turned green and saw EVERYTHING. As soon as I saw his headlights I knew it was a cop and I pulled over and turned my car off. He was nice and gave me a careless. Other than that I was clocked on i75 doing 129mph and got off with a moving violation somehow :eek:oohhh:

I've been lucky. I got in way more trouble with my E36 then I have in this car ( Knock on wood )

Ive had a speeding ticket in every car I have owned except the M5...

You could take the ticket to court. Worst that happens is you pay the ticket + ~$10 court fee, best case cop doesnt show and ticket is dismissed. 2 of the 3 times I went to fight a ticket the cop didnt show, the one that did show was a criminal speeding ticket. For a minor ticket like that the cop probably has better things to do.

I have had the opposite, I had my E36 for 3 years and never pulled over, I have been pulled over 3 times and I have not even owned this car for a year. One was speeding, yes my fault, other was front plate, though I never had a front plate on the E36, and the last one was tint...I attibute it to the down economy and LEO's out for ANY reason to make the LEO agency money.

I have a friend who is a NY State Trooper. Here is advice he has given me which has worked in getting let off w/ warnings & no ticket for:
- 77mph in a 55,
- 48mph in a 35
- illegal right turn on red---all in the past 18mos

As soon as you know you are busted, slow down immediately & pull over to a spot where the cop won't get killed by a passing motorist.

Lower window before cop gets to car, also lower rear drivers side so he can see into the back seat. If @ nite, turn dome light on.

Hands on the wheel and don't go fishing for your info in glove box while he is approaching the car. They hate that the most. Wait until he asks you & make it easy access in your glove box.

Talk to him like he is your grandfather and sprinkle in some "yes sir" when you can. It feeds their power trip.

If you are lucky enough to know another cop in the area, drop the name just before he goes back to his car to run your info. If you wait until he runs you prior to mentioning your cop friend, he thinks you are dumb (found this one out the hard way).

Being humble to an overly aggressive, testosterone fueled, frustrated civil servant will pay dividends when you drive off clean in your Beast and he is back into his creaking dodge with 150k on the clock.

Just my 2c

In NY the $10 court fee is called a "surcharge" and is usually at least $55, plus the ticket, and at 15 over could result in points on my license if they don't knock it down.

I'm not overly worried about it, but it's frustrating to say the least. I figure if I'm getting a ticket make it a good one, and one that I deserve.

pseudo stig - I do pretty much everything you describe and always fake a humble experience. I guess I should look at the bright side and be glad I didn't get a ticket for tints... mine are at 35%, I think the legal limit is 70% for side windows.

In California we have Trial By Declaration.
If you have that option in NY, you should give this a shot.

It's basically fighting your ticket without going to court.
So you would write up your defense why you think you are not guilty.
After you send it in, the cop have to write down his reason for pulling you over.
Then the judge will decide the verdict.

If the judge found you not guilty or the cop never submit his defense, then you win.
Otherwise, you'll be found guilty.

So far it's been working for me. If you have that option in NY, you should consider it.

Happy Birthday by the way. Forget about the ticket for now and go party!!!!

I just got one this past weekend going from Houston to Dallas, I was shot with laser doing 89 in a 70. She reduced it by 2mph and ticketed me for 87, wow, how generous. This is my first ticket in 4 years so I can go to driving school and get it dismissed.

A couple of years a go, I got unlucky, and the cop aimed his laser to my car and caught me doing 88 in 60 in my M3. My radar went off, but he already had hit me and read the speed. After he wrote me up, he kinda leaned down and pointed at my Passport 8500 radar and said "mine is better than yours!"
He never showed up to court, and the ticket was dismissed. So I got lucky there!
Happy Birthday! Think of the ticket this way; it was an excuse to jump on the board, and hear about our crazy stories! Plus, come on.... For god's sake, we are driving race cars everyday! Every once in a while we need to be reminded of it or we will get used to the ///M! Every one of us has got to have a story like that! It comes with the car! It's a package!

I'm sorry to hear that Ron. Here is the positive side, if you submit a copy of the defensive driving certificate to your insurance company, you will get a discount for attempting the course!

Interesting post to read today. I got a ticket this morning and I am still pissed off. It's my third in less than 18 months.

The funny part of it is that I had left my M5 at the house and took my wives new 740Li this morning. I was in deep conversation with my wife when I realized there was a motorcycle cop to the side of the road. Well, I freaked and pressed the brakes in case I was going above the speed limit. It was a 50mph zone and he gave me a ticket for going 62. Thanks for listening. Just trying to get it out of my system.:crying:

I'm seriously considering the laser jammer. I think it's worth the money. Does anyone have one? I wonder how the cop's attitude will be if they notice that on the car! I bet they will have no mercy, and will dig for more things to write you up!

Cops here are now required to show up for the court date. New laws just went into effect too. 40kph over the limit will get your car impounded and some very hefty fines. Cost you a couple grand to get back on the road. It sucks.

A while back a Ferrari and a BMW got confiscated for street racing here. The courts took the cars and auctioned them off last week. Brutal

Haven't had one in the M5 yet. Came close last week while doing 130 up an empty highway. Rounded a corner and a Pa. State Trooper was sitting in the median. Hit the brakes, got her down to 65 and as I was driving past he just shook his head. The Escort didn't go off so I knew I was safe even though he knew I was flying.

Right before I got the M5 I got nailed in my e34 540i. I work overnight and was coming home. Just had the car tuned and all new suspension put on. Two lane twisty back road that I was doing 60-65 on and it was posted at 40. Looked in my rear view mirror and there is a marked car looking like a Christmas tree. No siren just following me all lit up. He evidently had followed me for 1.7 miles before i noticed him. At court I told the Judge that the car was so quiet and the handling was vastly improved that I didn't realize I was going so fast. She asked why I didn't pull over right away and I told her that I was keeping my eyes on the road. The cop agreed that I was driving ok other than speeding and they dropped the ticket to 5 mph over and no points.

Living in Pennsylvania isn't really that bad. The state troopers are the only LEO allowed to use radar and they don't have laser. The locals have to time you with vascar ( a stopwatch basically ) or aerial timing between lines on the highway.

I got my first one in the M5 this Tuesday.. I feel your pain. My V1 didn't stand a chance against his Laser. I actually got pulled over Jan 1st of this year but the cop had a more urgent call and ran off before writing the ticket. I guess the severity of this ticket is making up for that one. :(
