Hey guys,

I'm looking on getting my hands on a 2002 onwards M5 in either Le Mans Blue or Carbon black.

Preferably no more than 50 thousand on the clock, and if I can I would like to keep to an all black interior, however I don't mind the 2 tone finish

I'm located in North Yorkshire UK but cannot venture to far because of work commitments and such, this has made it difficult for me to find my right car, and I know it'S not ideal but I thought it would be worth posting up on here in case anybody was looking to sell or knew of any idea cars which may suit what I'm after.

Thanks in advance

There's an excellent buyers guide in this month's Total BMW magazine.

Hey thanks for the replies and PMs...

Yes I bought that copy of BM Mag a few weeks ago, I Usually only stick to Autocar Mag & Top Gear these days but decided to get a copy which told me a lot of what I already knew with regards the pricing and what to look for, still a great guide and good to have on paper.. Makes me want to find my M5 even more so…

Also, just on the travelling side of things, does anybody use or can recommend a BMW Specialist around the Yorkshire area?

It's just that the a few months ago whilst travelling on the A66 via Road works, a tall V type sign stand decided to blow over as I was passing it and It knocked my Mirror almost off, even worse when I got back home, I noticed damage to the panel which runs above the door, great!!! This panel goes all the way to the back wing which is gonna cost a fortune should the dent not be amendable, which I don't think it will be!

There was so much rush hour traffic and it was a freak accident, especially since I had loud music on at the time and just though it had only caught my mirror!

Anyways, if anybody uses a specialist in the Yorkshire area please could you let me know of the details, I would be very gratefull. I don't want to use my Local BM dealer anymore for this car. The car is cherished by me and it is a rare manual with no dodgy interior finishes. It is as knew inside & out, yet trading it would be criminal as someone would get a bargain. we want to keep this car but don't want to be paying a hefty percentage of the cars value, just to fix a whole panel for one dent.

Thanks in advance

Hi

you should be still able to get one at BMW in the UK. They will deliver nationally (usually free of charge), plus you get the all important peace of mind from the approved used warranty, where today, I have just learned they are replacing my MAFS free of charge - hooray!

Good luck on finding the beast - post some picks when you do.

Cheers

Not so easy to find a good one with the right miles, spec, condition, owners, history and paperwork.

I bought one last month after looking at a few dogs. It has no satnav ( which is a must for me ) but just could not find one I wanted. I will retrofit nav soon.

Good luck, you will love it when you get it;)

Retro fitting nav is impossible unless you change the whole wiring loom - unless BMW just told me this so that I wouldn't make it a condition of sale....let me know how you get on - its the only thing that my M5 could really do with.

Hey people, thanks for all your replies and such on here, much appreciated...

I haven't been on here for a while, been busy with work and all that..

I have a quick question. - The (BMW Individual Audio System), was this standard on cars after 2001 & what does it Consists off speaker wise?

I am adamant on having a good Audio system in my next car and have grown tired of the standard speaker system in my current 530.

Music is a massive part of my life and having a good Audio system would really put a smile on my face.

Thanks again

Sorry, don't have time to offer a very useful answer, but you might get a better response if you (1) searched the board (2) started a dedicated thread for this issue rather than adding to the Finding... thread. Hope that helps. :)

Topper, strathstone in Hull have an 04 plate (one of the very last ones) on their lot - its up for 25k and I'll bet the miles are low.

It is fully spec'ed too having looked through the window (black leather / sat nav and all the trimings). I saw it as I was having some remedial work done on my failed key (see earlier post).

Only thing is though - its Silver. It was immacuate though and really worth a look. First time I ever had beast envy.....

Good luck

I use Metcalf Motorsport in Sherburn in Elmet. They have a racing team, so they know their business. Also, they have never let me down.

Their website is down at present, but if you pm me I will give you details.

Hi Trev. Also, a "what to look for in an E39 M5" in this month's Performance Car, same magazine group as BMW etc. My only advice would be to get best spec you can. My first M5 didn't have any of the toys, only a sunroof as well as a/c, and it was difficult to sell because of this. The only thing I would definitely be wary about is a sticky gearbox. Try any car you are thinking of buying from cold. If the box is tight to get gears and the clutch feels ok, you may, long term, be looking at a new box=expensive. Good luck!

I have a 2001 with the standard stereo; I don't know if it is what BMW referred to as Individual Audio, but it wasn't very good if you are wanting true hi-fi. In fairness it isn't too shabby for a standard fit stereo but is vastly improved with some aftermarket compontents.

In the front my car had 5.25" woofers in the doors, midrange speakers just infront of the door handles and tweeters just above that, behind the grille infront of the door windows. I'm not actually sure what the rear speakers are (I have them disconnected), but I think they are more 5.25" units.

A straight speaker swap with better units can improve things considerably; board sponsor Bavarian Soundwerks sells kits for the M5 (based in the US, don't know if they ship to us in the UK).

It's quite possible to change all of the speakers and amplification with good results; 5v analogue signals are available in the wiring looms in the boot. There are some really good installs floating around and it is possible to fit slim 6.5" speakers in the front doors with the help of a jigsaw but without changing the door cards at all so it looks 100% stock. The space occupied by the front midrange speakers is perfectly sized for many aftermarket tweeter units.

If you have DSP then all of the amp inputs are digital - no good for aftermarket amps. Member DouglasABaker has a blog which describes in detail how to remove DSP and gain analogue signals if that is a bridge you have to cross. It's not the simplest car to work on but worth it if you spend a long time driving and like your music...

Cool yeah, I looked at an 2002 in Carbon black today, Although no test drive as I didn’t have time.

I was a little taken back by the cosmetic condition... It's hard to explain but I expected a little better for a 20 grand car, although nothing was really wrong...

The car is yet to be prepped by the dealer and has full history with average miles... Am I being to picky and perfect?? I think so, that’s why I will go back over the wkend for a test drive...

It just seemed a little, well I'm not sure... I think I may have looked after my 530 to well! Inside felt & looked a little tired, alloys starting to corrode around the, dare I say it, nuts! Few blemishes on the paint work and so on... Oh yeah, and no rear lip spoiler, I thought this was standard. Makes a difference I think..

Anyhow, I know I'm being far to picky for a car which is essentially 5 years old, and I know I’m not going to find anything that's dam right perfect, but I don’t want to dive in and panic buy. I think it will be better when I have more time to look at the car better, and in the sun light, not in the showroom...

Looking forward to test driving... Also, I think I'm to attached to my 530, which I've cherished for years...

Cheers
