No, there was no oil pooling or on the coils. The front corner of the valve cover on that side is weeping a bit of oil near the oil cap. Not enough to concern me though. Step 34 sounds about right. Thanks Sailor.

Between the M5 and the M Coupe, which one is driven the most?

I bought the 2001 S54 M Coupe in Oct 2008 after previously owning a '99 S52 M Coupe. I tried to drive both as little as possible, but that was basically an impossible feat. I had a '94 Lexus ES 300 that I tried to daily drive. That died and I cash for clunker'd it for a 2009 Honda Fit Base Model. I put about 10k miles on that, but sold it in early 2011 when I moved to DC and didn't need 2 cars. Then I started taking the subway to work rather than driving the M Coupe. The 2001 was purchased with 45k miles and has 64k miles now after 3 years of ownership, so that's only about 6k miles a year. I received the M5 at the end of October and have driven it almost exclusively since as I've been doing work on it. I live in an apartment and can only bring one car home at a time, so the M Coupe has been sitting in the parking garage at work.

I plan to drive the M5 as it's much much more comfortable. The M Coupe has a lot of stuff done to it including Single Adjustable TC Kline Coilovers (Koni), urethane sub frame bushings, a 3.46 LSD (up from 3.15), and a host of other stuff. I kept track of most of the things I've done to both coupe's over the years here. As you can see, I used to work on it a lot, but for the last 2 years or so, it's just been oil changes with exception of the differential. I haven't been updating this site much.

I tell you what though, when you get in the M Coupe, it sounds obnoxiously loud compared to the M5 with stock exhaust. I have a B&B on the Coupe...

Here are the driver's side. I'd like to figure out who performed the spark plug change for my dad and shorted him two plugs. The front three on each side were replaced. The rear two on each side may possibly be originals!

Now it's time to talk to the powerchip guys and get this flash done to get rid of AA and all of my immediate maintenance requirements are complete until the spring, I suppose!

Those are some of the worst plugs I've ever seen. And yeah, I'd want to find the bozo who left the two old plugs in there, too. Thanks for the update.

Eee-Gads those plugs are fouled up. I imagine your pistons and your valves look similiar. Consider running a bottle of Chevron Techron in your tank for the next few fill ups. Can't hurt.

Well, update time.

All the coders are gone thanks to new sensors and Evolve software. I just passed state emissions and inspection. Installing a new koni suspension this weekend with new strut hats and thrust arm bushings. Hopefully that gets rid of my front end shudder. Then I'm clear sailing until it's time to do the clutch and valve cover gaskets.

Another update.

The m5 had a horrific shimmy up from and there was insane vibration in the wheel. Thrust arm bushings didn't fix it. Just finished installing Joni sport shocks...problem. solved.

Interestingly enough, if you read the TIS for front suspension troubleshooting, almost anything that can cause a shimmy or a wheel shake instructs you to replace front shocks. Did the trick for me!

September update.

My previous post wasn't correct. The suspension certainly helped, but it didn't get rid of the shimmy. I've finally done it.

So I just got done installing front wheel bearings, front wishbones, and the left, right, and center tie rods along with a new idler arm/bushing. The center tie rod had a failed ball joint and seemed to be the culprit, however, it could have been any of those pieces I suppose.

At this point, I've replaced everything between the front wheels except for replacing the actual drivers side front wheel. Everything else, including a new passenger side wheel is brand new. Clutch and cooling system are also brand new. Car 'should' go for a while without issue. A whole lot of things on it are now new.

I really appreciate everyone's assistance thus far. I've almost had the car for a year now and it's certainly getting there. I've put about 10k into parts so far, doing nearly all the work myself. Good thing the car was an inheritance!!!

haha, yeah, there are plenty of little things to start taking care of; exterior, interior/leather, pixels on the dash, etc, etc, etc. You're never done with cars. At least it's drivable now.

Thanks, yeah that is what I try to do every day, it hurts but it is worth it.
Clutch is running good, got few codes now but not SES Mike is looking into it, ABS light come on and off.
