fan noise? Belt noise?

Hello, trying to identify a rattley-tick type noise coming from the engine compartment. It can be heard clearly in the youtube below:

I searched a lot about the fan and fan clutch but I think this might be a belt issue? The fan (the one directly behind the grill and in front of the radiator) is brand new (no missing blades etc).

Thanks,
H

All i can hear is the Vanos rattle. Is that the noise you are hearing?

Seriously - you motor sounds fine to me. Maybe the noise is worse than the video reveals, but with DOHC there is always going to be a little bit of valve train noise, especially with higher lift/duration cams. My DOHC LT5 with long duration cams on both cams sounds very similar to my S62.

What do you other guys think about his noise levels at idle? Normal or excessive? Vanos problem or none?

Thanks:flag:
I'll tell ya all the God's-honest truth, my vanos noise used to be so bad when I got the car that you could hear it from outside with the hood closed.. Replaced whatever junk oil was likely in there with the recommended Castrol TWS10W60, and the vanos noise gradually went away. It didn't happen immediately or overnight, but it went away gradually. First, it stopped making it when idle for 60+ seconds. Then it only made it on startup for like 10 seconds. Then it only made it after not being driven for 3 or 4 days, and for 10 seconds or so.

Now, I can start her up cold after not driving for almost a full week, and you won't hear a damn thing.

IMHO, use the recommended oil. Unless something is really loose in those vanos gears, the noise should go away. At least, use the correct oil weight and viscosity.

I don't have vanos, but my car and most other e39's V8's are plagued with that same noise. I am using 10w-40 Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic and my car is only 25% as noisy as before I used it. I change my oil twice in a service interval so there is no need for the LL oil. I am not sure if anyone makes a high mileage 10W-60 oil, but if they do I would give that a try.
