Pulling onto the highway last night. Noticed that a big pack of cars (traffic from an offloading ferry) was approaching. Squirted into the slow lane ahead of them all, phew.

A few seconds later, a sports car darted up behind me from the fast lane...judging by the square-ish little pop-up headlights, I thought it was an NSX and grunted.

As we approached the next off-ramp, he darted into the exit lane to my right and pulled even with me...a black F355 Spyder! Just when I thought he was going to exit, he slowed down, zipped behind me and then past me in the the fast lane! I downshifted in hot pursuit.

Long story short (since none of you would know the Upper Levels Highway in Vancouver), I never relinquished more than the 3 or so carlengths of momentum he had on me by instigating the race.

We were connected at the bumpers by an invisible rope up to 210 km/h, at which time my exit came up. I let up, signalled and flashed him. He flashed his hazards back as he blasted off.

Heart pounding and hands shaking, I made my way down to my buddy's apartment, only to see it 6-0 Mets. Close game or not, I should have stayed on the highway!

So if I am interperting correctly, you said that the M5 and 355 were pretty much equal in acceleration at highway speeds and up? If so, awesome. Yes, you should have stayed on. Never the less, good work.

I raced a F355 Berlinetta once. We both punched it from second gear. He was a car length ahead of me at the end of second. We were in third gear for a brief moment before we had to slow down. I was able to keep the distance and felt I was actually gaining on him. It was a very hot day. Temperature was well in the 90F. I felt the lack of power from the engine. I'm confident my M5 can outrun the F355 on a cooler day.

Jeff, that was Peter's Ferrari, the one that was at the dyno day, I'm referring to.

It was the latter half of 3rd gear and all of 4th. Can't say I made up any ground at all; I'm just thrilled that I gave up virtually none.

In all honesty I would assume he'd start walking at higher speeds. But -- I'm sure last night confused him a little.

This whole wolf in sheep's clothing thing just tickles me pink...it's the discretion and competence - like a guy loosening his tie and running a four-minute mile...

I LOVE MY CAR...
