It can, but it's not hard to pull the trim, and you can clean it with alcohol / apply the back to black or whatever without getting it all over the car...

I've done it both ways, off is a lot better, IMO.

I'll throw a recommendation out for Gtechniq C4 here as well. It's not cheap, but I did my trim last year, and it still looks great.

It takes all of 10 minutes to remove the trim, I would just remove it and use your preferred black plastic restoration product.
