Extended warranty

So I did a search but did not find what I was looking for. Here's the problem- I love this car too much. Any business trips with associates...I'll drive. Trip to the grocery store...I'll drive. Fancy a weekend away honey...I'll drive.

So, in three weeks I've done more than 3,000 miles. Sat in the dealership having just handed over a six figure check the last thing I wanted to do was pay $3,500 more for an extended warranty. Now, I'm not so sure as the only thing I could ever see myself replacing the beast with is the fifth incarnation which is four years away (and maybe five for me as I will NOT pay markup).

So, some questions;

Who bought the extended warranty? Is it 100,000 miles/8 years? What did you pay (I've heard prices vary by dealer)? Also, can I wait until I reach say 40k and not pay a price penalty?

NB. I'm not interested in a non-BMW warranty as I've heard horror stories. The premium is well worth the peace of mind.

Thanks guys.

Link doesn't work bra
I paid $3,800 for an EasyCare program, 6 years (from date of warranty purchase, not car build date) 100K miles, $200 deductible, $30/day rental reimbursement, maximum coverage offered. I bought the car on 11/24/07 with 18K on the clock (8/06 production date) and I now have 23K, so I figure since the factory warranty is nearly half, the extended warranty is a good investment, especially since I put around 20-22K miles per year. This also includes wheels and tire coverage similar to SafeGuard's Tire/Wheel warranty. I know other friends who have EasyCare on Mercedes and other cars and they have not had any problems.
These guys (see below) sell the "original owner" plan for $4,850 but I think you can do better if you haggle a bit with your dealer.
  • Program backing by BMW of North America
  • 2 year/50,000-mile peace of mind protection (takes affect at expiration of BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty)
  • Scope of coverage like the Certified Pre-Owned BMW Vehicle Program
  • Includes BMW Roadside Assistance
  • Use of original BMW new or authorized remanufactured parts
  • No vehicle inspection required

Thanks guys. Interesting stuff. The only thing i'm still not sure is if the dealer will penalize me the longer I wait. The finance woman said something of the sort but she was perhaps just trying to ramp up her cut.
A good read, thanks.

One unrelated question- What is the key fob shaped thing in my glove compartment. I tried to remove it but it wouldn't budge and I didn't want to pull to hard. I think it's the keyless entry transponder? Also, the back of the glovebox has a flimsy plastic section that folds down. Is that just if I wanted to fiddle with the electrics? The manual doesn't apear to mention any of this.

Be careful that you know who is backing the warranty- the only BMW warranty, historically, has been the Original Owners Plan- this is not a great warranty, more like the CPO coverage.

Just because a BMW dealer sells an extended warranty does not mean it is a BMW backed warranty...

Hmmm, food for thought. Thanks for the input, I wouldn't have thought of asking that.
