Any ideas welcomed,,,,,,,,, have a light tap tap rattle in the engine which appears as soon as the idle setlles back to under 1000rpm hot or cold.
Sounds like a valve tappett but lower in the engine and sounds a bit
' harder' than a top end noise.
Specialist thought it could be an idler bearing / main dealer thinks it could be
the vanos system, BMW warranty been to hear it and 1st of all agreed to strip the engine - at one time discussed a new engine and now thinks it best to live with it and see what happens - noise has been recorded on the history so it will be dealt with if iy gets worse as basically they don't know what it is.

Local dealer service manager says it is nothing to worry about compared to
40 - 50,000 miler M5s he has heard that sound like a bag of nails ! M5 engines
start to make big noises after 40,000 from his experience. WEird.
Car has dome 18000 miles so far and noise appeared around 12000 miles.

Deal appears to be to leave it and if it fails then will repair, but in the meantime the car does not sound nice on tick over and it's annoying.
I don't have a lot of faith in the dealer, the clucth was slipping badly at 14000miles - they tested and said nothing wromg - can only drive it at 30mph around here sir etc etc. At 70 under acceleration it filled the car with burning smell, I paid and fitted a new clucth and the old one was burned blue although not worn out, so just slipping.

Ideas welcomed thanks..

I have the same sound coming from under my hood and my VANOS has been replaced as well as the oil valves. My tech is very sharp and has about sixteen years under his BMW belt. He has checked everything he knows to check and has pulled in the area tech rep or what ever he is called and basicly we are down to a wait and see position. He takes care of three other M5s and none of them have this sound :confused2 :confused2 :confused2 :confused2 :confused2

I know this is an old thread, but I've only just bought my M5 and am new to the board. Mine's done 80,000 double serviced miles and sounds, as you say, 'like a bag of nails' at tickover. If you open the bonnet it actually sounds, in my wife's words 'like a diesel' !!

Did you ever figure the problem out?

I have this issue on both the M5 & Z8. Both went in to the dealer who tells me this is a normal sound- if I really hated it they would do the work to fix it- but I didnt want them to do any more work than necessary. The understanding I have with them is they have seen it and said its no big deal, should something go wrong that this is involved with, they will now cover me.

a loud noise on startup that settles is VANOS (had both mine replaced)

the ticking noise when lifting the bonnet is normal - some are however louder than others.

the amount of pulleys etc attached to the engine also dont help with the silence.

BUT, this is a race bred 400hp V8, not a Lexus, so dont be too harsh on her, just buy a loud race exhaust so you cant hear it  :15: lovelove

Thanks Jerry.

I get the impression that it is fairly 'normal' after searching the board for a couple of hours (I'm sure I should be doing some work).

If it is that common and nothing to worry about, how come no one says exactly what causes it?!
I'm wondering alos, if it's connected to the revs wandering a bit around tickover, i.e parking?

The ticking/rattly noise is common from the M engines, which as chain driven can be noisier than similar cambelt V8's (ferrari's i believe)

Your issue with idle is a different matter, and has many possibilities like MAF's O2 sensors, CAM sensors etc. The dealer will spot this straight away once youre plugged in!!!

cheers

The good old Vanos rattle…… referred to by many as the lifters making noise……. Yes it seems to be a character of this motor and like many I frown every time I fire my gal and it rears its ugly head……. Sometimes after sitting for weeks…… other times within hours of turning her off…… No apparent pattern. However unless something is wrong it will go away and then once the pleasure of driving her is felt I seem to completely forget about it……

Now to the consistent ticking sound…….. without hearing your car I will share that all of the M5’s/Z8’s that I listen too have the ticking sound and it is the 8 fuel injectors dancing away….and the fact that there is a common steel rail on each side housing a bank of 4 further transmits this noise. This is something that if you work around fuel injected cars is a normal noise. Some louder than others however the M5 is one car that I can listen to with no concerns.

Take care.

A Little different, but I have a 2001 X5 4.4 and a 2002 540i/6 that both make the same noise you are describing as VANOS noise briefly on startup. There is no real pattern to when it will do it, except I have noticed that when parked on a slant, like a driveway, or something with a gentle grade the noise is more prone to rear its ugly head. Can anyone confirm this pattern?

My car has virtually no engine noise, just a little chattering at the front that sounds quite tuff and mechanical, tappet noise is virtually non existent. This chattering you have to listen for, get the car in town and you won't hear it. The noise is probably VANOS working properly, the tappets are quiet. I have probably twice had the car idle with a tick for a few moments but went straight away (After a long stand - Oil draining from the hydraulic tappets)

I started my car up next to a mates Aston DB9 yesterday and they both sounded awesome, the level of pulley noise, whirring and machanical symphony form both hoods was very similar. I HATE tappet noise, I ran my E30 M3 with Schrick cams at 6 thou clearances to get rid of it - Now that could easily sound like a bag of nails !

My under bonnet noise is no louder than a merc ........ (NOt a diesel merc !!)
The car has oil changes betwen services and has done 65k miles :noSMG:

I suspect Vanos is responsible, what year is the car ? 2000 ?
