Im a little confused. Do you mean that engine number are different than the 7 last numbers of the VIN nr? My car have chassisnr WBAEE310701050005.And as far as i can see(under not perfect light),the numbers on the engine are 1050005.Could somebody have "printed" the vin nr on the engine when they eventually replaced an other engine? Or what?:1zhelp:

Not sure about the ////M models, but it is very common for BMW's of the 80's era to have the same engine number as the last 7 digits of the VIN.
I've owned several non-M E28's, which all had/have matching numbers.
Here's the details of my current "project" as an example:
Year: 1988
Make: BMW
Model: 525 EE
Main Colour: White
VIN: WBADB620101866647
Plate: OB9276
Engine No: 1866647

So it would not surprise me at all if your early M635CSi has similarly matched engine/VIN numbers.

Well as I said, M cars are different...I checked yesterday on my papers...

here is mine 85 M6 Euro version:
VIN: 1052286 Engine N° 41643662 ( I do have the original certificate ) and of course I checked it.
I own my M6 now for 15 years, and it is a "matching numbers" one !,
one of the 192 sold in France.:hihi:
