I have a e 34 m5 engine and on te engine block number location is stampt ( 21 s38b39 ) never seen it .. and the same number on the cilinderhead ? anyone have an idea why this is? should these normally be different numbers? it all seems original bmw to me?

There were rumors of a few (I think around 100) m5s that left the factory with around 400 hp maybe this is one of them? Can’t remember if they increased displacement for those or not. Someone might have more info, again this is just a guess.

No, no, never. A few, 1 customer car, identified (!)
and the rumours refer to 3 max 5 cars, saloons only,
400 ECE/408 DIN hp. Supposedly no increased displacement.

The power graph that was shared with the sale of that 400bhp car did mention B39... from memory...
