Help! 1994 3.8 , 140,000 miles, owned for the last 7 years and never had a problem until now.Car has been in dealer off and on for 6 months, still unable to detect problem:
Engine will cut dead for no reason.Any speed , accelarating or decelarating.might do it once or not at all.
Ignition lights come on,but Engine will not restart by leaving in gear and letting clutch out.It will only restart by turning ignition off then on again.
Any ideas?

Coils, immobiliser, fuel pump, could be a few things!

I would say to check the electrical system's grounding first of all (seems likely for some reason), and after that, check the fuses to make sure they're all working and seated properly (seems mundane yes, but you never know). This definitely sounds like an electrical issue, like a loose connection or thereabouts.

my 535i used to do that, it was eventually tracked to corroded wire to the immobiliser.

get them to disconnect the alarm, then try it.
