Mmm, mmm, M3

When BMW launches a car, you can usually expect an M version to follow shortly, particularly when its latest offering is the new 3 Series. We snagged these photos of the next M3, which like its predecessor distinguishes itself from the standard 3 Series with dual exhausts and larger front air inlets.
Following the lead of Mercedes-Benz’s C55 AMG and Audi’s S4, the fourth-generation M3 ditches the venerable 3.2-liter inline six for the 4.0-liter 400-hp V8 left unemployed when BMW upgraded the M5 to V10 power. Details on the M3’s launch date, however, aren’t clear. But as is the case with the M5 and M6, we expect to see it within a year.

This implies that the V8 will be the S62 or a close relation. Other reports have implied that it will be a new engine that is more a derivation of the new V10.

Tom
Take a new 5.0L V10, chop off two cylinders and what you get is a new M3's high revving V8 with 4.0L capacity and specific power of 100hp/L. S62 is to slow revving concept (and 5.0L, so 80hp/L) to derive this E90M3's V8 from it.

Doubtlessly it'll be one great engine!! kinggf

Yeah.. thats only the coupe..

And only the rumored 330kW and 9000 RPM is going to cut it.. They aren't going to come into the market under-powered and behind the RS4.. NO WAY M Division would allow that.. the M3/M4 will be the quickest M apart from the similarily poweres Z4 M..

Those pics are too heavily disguised to give us much indication of what the next M3 will look like.

I sure that the delay in the M series allows for further improvements in cosmetic problems that have been field tested in the regular model and sucks in those with more money than sense who can afford to buy for example a 330 first and then the M3 when that comes out.

Pip :confused2.

Thats what AUTOCAR says. Guess it saves on development costs given the relatively low volumes of the M cars.

I think all BMW engines are true masterpieces of engineering. The M engines are on another level altogether.
