This past weekend my wife and I had the opportunity to line up both of our cars at a stoplight. I was on my way to a pool tourney and my wife was running into town to run some errrands. We live in a very desolate area that hardly ever has traffic. My wife was in the M5 and I was in the M3 and we roll up to a red light. I look over and this is what I see my wife doing as she throws a couple revs my way --> :grinyes:

Some facts that play into the run:

*The M5 is bone stock and the M3 has a Stage 2 Active Autowerkes S/C which has a tune of 420hp.

*The M5 has a fresh square set-up of 275/40 Yokohama S-Drives and the M3 has extremely worn out square set-up of 245/40 Dunlop StarSpecs.

*The M3 weighs significantly less as i've done some lightweight modifications...just under 3100lbs with me in it.

*Weather was around a very cool 55 degrees. Engines were warmed up, but tires weren't.

*My wife can drive a standard transmission better than the average Joe...pretty good in my opinion.

I'm holding my revs around 3000, hoping for a decent launch with the worn out rubber. The light turns green and we're off. My launch was aweful, as I spun through first gear. Meanwhile, she gets a decent jump and moves on me about a car and a half. I shift into second gear and regained traction. I managed to stay in my power band which helped because I obviously needed the help of the blower to get back in it. At the top of second I was back even with her. I quickly shift into third gear and slowly gain another half car, but she's still right there. At the top of third, I managed to get a whole car in front of her, and quickly, but smoothly, shift into fourth. By the time I reached 100mph I was two cars up and I let off. I'm sure she would have started to reel me in at this point, but we weren't trying to top them out.

After talking with her about how she felt she did on the run, she said that her shift into second gear wasn't the smoothest, which let me back in it, since I had to shift into second early due to spinning out in first. I asked her if she mis-shifted, but she said no, that it just wasn't as smooth as she wanted it to be.

I don't condone street racing whatsoever. A matter of fact, I usually keep it on the track, but i've been wanting to see an outcome of this for a few months now. This wasn't planned by any means, so who knows when we'll go at it again. The setting was just perfect since it was very early Sunday morning with not a car in sight. It definitely was fun and entertaining for the both of us. I guess it will be a lifelong grudge match everytime we leave the house at the exact same time.

Here's a pic of me and our two toys.

Sounds like fun.

Haha! That's awesome! Do you suppose she would of stayed in front by a car length or so if she had had a better shift into second?

possibly, but with all the same variables considered, i would have just been a car ahead at 100mph...

Looks like fun times. Does worn tires really play a role on dry pavement?
yes, depending on the tire temp...

Yes, to the point that if they are so worn out they have no tread left they should actually grip better given the tread pattern is only there to displace water in wet conditions.

Think about why F1, Nascar and indy cars etc run slicks in dry weather.

Even if they were worn to a degree whereby they still had a small amount of tread left, they should still be grippier than brand new tyres that take a few hundred miles to properly bed in like stated was on the M5 at the time.

After saying that, a 420HP lighter car should be getting the hop on a stock e39 any day of the week, i doubt that tyres would have played out a massive difference in that scenario
slicks are useless if they aren't warmed up to a sticky condition...it was cold outside and my tires were cold and hard...this put me at a disadvantage...

But with a tire that is so worn down, chances are that tire is getting pretty old anyway. Old tires tend to get hard. A brand new set of Star Specs is easily more grippy then a used up set.
agreed, which was my point in stating that i had worn out tires and an ambient temp of 55 degrees...

Agree.

Again, agree.

420 hp 3100 lbs ( 7.4) vs. 394 hp and 3950 lbs ( 10)? Even with a little more low end torque in the v8 and an extra gear, it shouldn't be close. I would think a FI E36 should easily walk a stock M5.

Now having said that, pulling a couple of car lengths is pretty strong, especially if you got behind. I don't think people realize how much a jump gives the person in front. It takes a lot more power to overcome.

But starting even, and no contest.

Regards,
Jerry
i think you meant 13.5hp/lb vs. 10hp/lb, but you are correct, the m3 should triumph no problem over the m5...

Thanks for sharing! I would think this would be a weekly challenge between you and your wife. Loser buys dinner and drinks:cheers:

you would think, but we have a two young boys, so most of the time they are in the M5...no aggressive driving with the kiddos...besides, win or lose, dinner and drinks come out of the same bank account...

It might be the 240HP version but to eek that out to over 400HP is very impressive.

Whats it like to drive given such a high power output in a relatively light car?
its quite a blast...obvious traction issues in 1st especially with the 3.38lsd and getting sideways is way too easy...

that's too funny...i actually asked her if we could do a roll race from 20-100mph (she hates going over 100mph), and she just laughed at me...

Just noticed your M5 runs on 275/40, does that rub at all, assuming not a typo?
