How reliable is the LSD unit on the e39 M5? Has it ever failed on you or known to wear off under street usage?

Maybe drifting kills them quickly?

My buddy who has a background in autocross, as well as experience with 540i/6 and M5s, said that all of them had the LSD unit shot - now I'm really concerned!

Mine was wasted by 2008 and I replaced it. The discs were worn out and it quit functioning. I had autocrossed it a fair amount, all with R-comp tires, from 2005 onward. The S62 puts out a lot of torque, and the LSD is fairly weak to begin with a low clamping load... BTW, no 540i/6 came from the factory with an LSD -- there was no option offered by BMW for one on the 540i.

I think they are fairly reliable, most owners dont push their car hard like that. not sure what the breakaway torque is (mine was around 70ft on a electronic wrench) but thats one way to check your diff. its fairly weak and one area that cant really change how the car goes, too bad a fully setup diff is costly
