Evening all,

The changes in my E38 B12 6.0 are not as smooth as I'd like and reading past posts (especially from jon_G_S), it seems that the gearboxes can be a problem on these cars.

Is the solution a rebuild or replacement and is the 'box Alpina specific or just a 750i item? Any idea of costs?

Many thanks,
Bryn.

The transmission on E38 V12 is actually IMO ,, a crap,, their life is usually around 60-80k km ,, i have herad so many stories about a faulty transmission on these cars ,,,

sorry to hear :crying:

Hi,

I think that these gearboxes are just a weak point on the B12s. Both of ours have had replacements - luckily not the end of the world as they are standard 750 gearboxes - from memory about a £2500 job at BMW. Luckily so far ours have been covered by warranties!!

They normally start off with 'thumpy' gear changes going up the gears and then the same back down the gears - sometimes they hang onto the gears too long as well - eventually one of them just stuck in a gear and would not go anywhere.....

All the best

Thanks for your reply Jon, that's exactly the symptomns that I have. Car is on 75k kms but alas no warranty.

Do you think a fluid and filter change is worth trying or is this a terminal problem? As I don't have the luxury of a warranty, I will try to get the box rebuilt before looking at replacements.

Cheers,
Bryn.

Hi Bryn,

You can try an oil change - it does cost around £430 at BMW though....!! We just had it done to our lhd one (which is on its second gearbox at 80,000 km - 1st replaced at approx 48,000 km by BMW warranty)

Some gearbox companies may not want to change the oil / filter as they claim it can disturb the insides of the box - I am not sure which is the best way to go - a specialist gearbox company close to me will not do the job on another BMW auto we have as they have had reports / experience of boxes failing soon after the oil changes even though the correct oil has been put in?? I would ask around the specialists.

I think that next time if it happens we will go with a rebuild as ours are now also out of warranty - from previous experience that will be approx £1300 including removal and refit of box.

Good luck!

E39 boxes don't have the best reputation either. :crying2:

I've been requesting a fluid change with every engine oil change at the dealers for the last two services on the B10V8 (42k and 50k). It's not a full oil change because fluid stays in the TC but a simple gearbox empty and re-fill gets about 65% of the fluid changed. This costs about £200 including labour and puts my mind at rest to some degree.
