Hi all,

I would like to share with you this E31 S38 swap. Before I sow the video's immediately I was like blaaahh S38 into super over weight and FAT E31 chassis. Its not good but after I sow the drift I actually change my mind :M5rev:

What a clean swap has been done on those both cars!, looks like a factory cars.. Engine sits nice in the engine bay area push in to the fire wall. It sounds so good and it revs fast like S38... It does idle as it should about 900+/-

Enjoy

Ivan,

To the last kg !:D

Bmw I6 engines:

M20 ( aka little six ) : 117 kg.
M30 ( aka big six ) : 143 kg.
M102 ( M30 with turbo, used in the 745i E23 ) : 145 kg.
M50/M50TU : 136 kg.
M52 : 118 kg.
M54 : 126 kg.

Bmw V8 engines:

M60 ( 3.0/4.0 ) : 146 kg.
M62 ( all other V8 ) : 140 kg.

Bmw V12 engines:

M70 ( old V12 ) : 155 kg.
M73 ( new V12 ): 150 kg.

Motorsport engines:

M88/3 : 146 kg.
S38 : 151 kg.
S70 : 165 kg.

I would personaly choose the M62 for that kind of tuning. That engine has a huge potential...a prefer small engines. V12 are great but someone I know has a '88 750i and it is quite lazy for my taste. However I have to admit that the S70 is another thing...

P.S: Engine weights are for a dry engine with no manifolds, starter motor, alternator, etc. They will vary by 2 or 3 kg for different types of fuel injection and model year.

Cool but I would rather keep the V12 in the e31. M70 with 295 hp and M73 with 323 hp are pretty close to the S38's figures. S70 would be ideal with 372 hp (US spec). With some software tuning and other engine mods the M70 or 73 could easily take the S38b38's 340 hp and go way over the S38b36's 315 hp (what they used in the video). Still was really cool though!

That's why if I was going to cobble an e31, I'd use an E39 M5 as the donor.

Lots of power and a 6 speed
