I just picked up my 2000 M5 this past Sunday. I notice that the driver's door lock questionably activates, as in it sometimes locks and sometimes doesn't. In addition, it sometimes opens and sometimes takes a number of tries before it comes up. Searching around it seems as though this is somewhat common place. I know of a '01 525i at the local junkyard that I can use as a donor. Do you believe that it is just the electronic actuator, or the whole lock assembly with both the shepards hook arm and the door lock nub that is needed? I don't believe that this will cost much, but I'd like to take care of it before I find myself locked out entirely and having to shred my door panel. Thanks in advance for any help,

The culprit is usually a failing door actuator.

Is it not possible to unlock the driver's door manually with the key?

Not sure. The door still locks and unlocks, it just has questionable integrity. I'd rather tackle it now, while I still can open the door, than wait until it completely fails. So it is typically just the electric actuator module? Seems simple enough to replace.
