Have always had early warning with the V1 driving in norcal making me feel a bit "untouchable". Well, on the way to work this morning, after a slight bend, a familiar face showed up. The motorcycle CHP constantly patroling that stretch of road with his radar always on before, suddenly hits me with the radar, no earlier warnings at all! :eek:h:

I see him pull over vehicles at least once a week on that stretch and I always had a good early warning in the past and thus tend to go a bit above the speed limit when the V1 remains silent.

Luckily the red volvo in front of me wasn't going too fast (I had to admit that I was getting a bit annoyed by its speed grrrrrrr ) and we passed the radar scan at about 50 MPH (speed limit was 40 or 45 MPH, can't remember. This is the 84 canyon road between Fremont and Sunol).

I guess CHP officers now realize how many units Valentine sold and are getting smarter with their radar guns. Learned to use short bursts than constant spraying. Be careful out there, I was fortunate the dodge this one, he really scared me when he put his gun down and made a u-turn. And for thanking him not pulling me over, I gave a highbeam warning to all oncoming traffic of his existence :D

I share in your scary experience. About two months ago I was driving down a dark, 2 lane road in the Roseville area. The area is near an Indian casino and the particular area I was in was near a main turn to the casino road. I am hustling pretty good from a stop sign on the two lane road, no cars, nothing. I am in 2nd, around 40 MPH shift down to 3rd and all of a suddent the Ka lights up to full blast!!! I take my foot right off the accelerator and see a CHP, pulled up in a driveway, no lights on - wow! I move right past him at near the speed limit and he lets me roll. Roseville PD is now using laser and you pretty much have NO warning when one of those hits you.

My wife was on 50 headed to SF from Sacramento and was coming down the Vallejo hill when all of a sudden, she looks over and a cop is getting on the on-ramp, pacing her going 75 - no radar, nothing. She pulls her over and issues a ticket. The following week I was driving on 99 and saw a cop running in the right lane with all the traffic going the speed limit. He exits and then traffic picks way up. I see him get right back on the freeway, no radar, and then picks up one of the cars that took off in the left lane.. - LAME.

Story1:
Driving on a two lane road, doing around 100+, summer, just at dusk. 3 years ago in a Q45. End of the road gets twisty and starts climbing, so I am coasting. I see a car coming down the hill, lights on. As we pass I realize he is CHP... crap. I look down- 85+mph.

I watch the rear view as I continue up the hill. He's got two cars behind him, and but none behind me. Just as I reach the hill I see him stomp the brakes and pull over.

I'm in a panic. I'm on a two lane undivided road with no shoulders- just dirt banks. He's just gonna track me down with no place for me to dart.... Once the two cars pass him, he is on me.... ****... I say- screw it, and pull off the road, up on the dirt, and pull a U-turn. Almost stuck in the culvert on the side. Barely make it.

I turn the headlights on and proceed now in the direction the CHP *was* going.

As I crest the hill, at a respectful 45, the CHP comes charging over the hill with red and blues flashing.

My heart stops... I just watch...as...he..keeps...going!!!!

I take the long way home, with a pulse that takes 10 miles to calm down.

Story 2:

My father once got a ticket for 'improper use of headlights' when warning others of a speed trap. Officer made him get out and help with a check of the operation of the headlights, even smacking each light to verify there weren't loose connections. A.H.

Interesting. In Texas it is NOT illegal to warn other drivers of a speed trap with your headlights flashing. It certainly makes sense that if you can drive here with a radar detector and other cars are following you that the same theory would apply to the flashing of the headlights. Smacking the headlights would have irrated me to no end, but I have never heard of "improper use of headlights" before.

Yes, an NMA member was ticketed for this offense under the pretense that he was "interfering with a police officer" or some such crap. This went up on appeal to a higher traffic court, or maybe a district court I don't remember. Anyway, he beat it because it was an infringement on his 1st ammendment rights (free speech). :hihi:

At least there was a judge that had the sense to realize that the cops were infringing on his constitutional rights. The police chief had to tell his officers that they could not ticket drivers for warning others by flashing their lights after he won his appeal. I'm not a legal expert, but I think this argument could be used in any court in the United States.

Hey MAH,

Both detectors and flashing your lights are illegal in OZ.

They will confiscate a dectector, or impound the car, and gut it, if you don't give it up. You will be fined and get a real dressing down for flashing your lights. "Obstructing & Hindering Police."

Everyone still does it though. :hihi:

That stretch from Sacramento to SF is filled with CHP, you also have to watch for airplanes too as those signs are legit, they do have air patrol and send their ground units after you (my bro in law learned the hard way, but of course he's in a yellow e36 M3 ouich )

I've seen the same trick before, cop exits, and takes the onramp again to nail someone. I didn't fall for the trick, but someone did making my drive the rest of the way trouble free.

Good save! Hehe, 'improper use of headlights' they are obviously more pissed about we cutting their revenue.

Wow! Oh yes, I believe you cannot own firearms either, correct? Well, here in Texas you are allowed a bit more freedom on the highways, so long as you don't go over board with them.

What does fuel cost down under on a per gallon basis? Don't give me the measurement in metrics, we rejected that years ago!
