Chicago-snowing like there is no tomorrow.<O:p</O:p
Got to work this morning fine, but later in the afternoon, it started snowing. I wasn't worried; it’s going to stop soon-yeah maybe a week from now!<?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype class=inlineimg id=_x0000_t75 title="Stick Out Tongue" src="../ubb/tongue.gif" smilieid="6" stroked="f" filled="f" path="[email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected]@5xe" alt="" border="0" o<img></v:shapetype> :grrrrr:<v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><V:p
Anyways, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
7:30</st1:time> I left work and started out for the highway a quarter of a mile away for my nightly 1.5 hour commute. When I got to the on ramp, the car stops moving forward and it slowly creeps to the side. I made it about a quarter of the way and now I'm stuck. If I tried to go forward I risk putting the tail in the ditch. So I sat there thinking how stupid :confused:I was for not listening to the weatherman. When I went out to assess the situation, I noticed that my rear tires were BALD and the 6 inches of snow was not plowed! I couldn't believe that I was so careless as to drive on bald tires. As cars passed me by to get on the highwayhmmm, I felt so ashamed to have put the beast in such a quandary:confused2. And what’s worse? My cell phone is almost out of battery. About 15 minutes later, 2 cars pulled over and offered to help. We tried everything to no avail. So finally we gave it 1 last try to back out of the ramp and we made it! Joey and 2 other guys-I owe you!:cheers:You guys stopped while everyone else passed on by. Now I'm at least off the ramp and back on the side streets, but still not moving. A while later a cop showed up do to my call for help, another nice guy. I asked him to help <v:shape id=_x0000_i1031 style="WIDTH: 17.25pt; HEIGHT: 11.25pt" alt="0" type="#_x0000_t75"><v:imagedata src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\vin\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtml1\01\clip_image007.gif" o:href="http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/1zhelp.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape>by blocking the highway as my friend and I tried to push the car across the intersection and onto some asphalt. I finally got out of that intersection and returned to my work.

<O:p</O:pWhen I got home(3 hours later), I reflected on the incident and felt bad that I didn't even have a business card to give Joey when he asked. Worse, I didn’t even give him any cash which, I later realized, I had in my wallet. Joey and his buds- THANKS! I will have to find a way to repay this act of kindness.
I could have been in a worse situation tonight, but thanks to some random acts of kindness, I'm safely at home. Hope you guys made it home ok.

What have I learned? Get new tires before its too late. This weekend, new tires, any advise?<O:p</O:p
I just wanted to share my bad and good night in the windy city.<v:shape id=_x0000_i1032 style="WIDTH: 12pt; HEIGHT: 12pt" alt="0" type="#_x0000_t75"> <v:imagedata src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\vin\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtml1\01\clip_image008.gif" o:href="http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/a_smil17.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape>:blabla:cherrsagai<O:p</O:p

Bald tires or not, unless you have dedicated snow tires you will be in bad shape in snow. Snow tires are AMAZING.

God I love not having Winters. Don't get me wrong I love the nice brisk cold weather, but when it comes to driving I enjoy 10 months of basically summer lol

I don't know how you can even entertain the notion of driving a 400bhp vehicle with bald tyres. Sorry mate, but I've no sympathy on that issue.

That's just plain madness!!

I listen to the weather all the time. My ///M has seen snow one time and I had brand new summer tires on her as well. Took me me 2 hrs to go 4 miles to work.... Never again, after all I have other cars to use.

Lesson learned, heck -we all have moments.

I also check the weather quite often, if it isn't in the 40's and dry -she stays in the garage...

...which means for Germany, she's mostly in the garage this time of year :(

My tires have anti-snow superpowers. It snowed over 4 inches in the weeks prior to my getting them, but it hasnt snowed ONCE since I put them in the car over a month ago.

This also coincides with my traffic controlling-transmission, which makes traffic slow down whenever I engage the clutch to upshift.

My M5 will stay in the garage if the forecast calls for inclement weather.
In NH. that can be quite often though.
My other cars have dedicated Winter wheels with Dunlop Wintersport's on them.
As sad many times, just like your feet, you should dress your car appropriately for the weather.

Driving such RWD with high power like M5 in snowing condition/winter withouth snow tires is careless.

Do you know that your summer tires is no longer pliable and starting to harden when the temp get below 42F. (translation the tires grip suck).
Snowing or not when the weather got really cold, the proper tire is winter tire.

Thanks god nothing happen to you this time.
If I were you I'd invest in some snow tires. :).

I was not aware of this. But did the car come with summer tires from the factory?

All tires that comes with the M5 either Dunlop8080, or Michelin PS (not PS2), and any performance tires (PS2, Bridgeston S03, etc..) are not designed for extreme cold weather, snow, ice etc.

Hence it will lose it grips due to weather easily, plus with snowing condition the harden rubber, and bigger tread blocks (summer tires normally has bigger block for maximum grip) are not designed for snow/ice.

About the 42F switchover, I don't remember where I read it. But IIRC it was some article by Continental Tires.

But here is a good link for Winter Tech
Kudo's for tirerack for putting up a lot of good information. http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/index.jsp

I wasn't a believer of winter tires 13 years ago (always run all season (which is a comprise for both winter and summer)), not until 2 years later I gave it a try and become a believer. :)

Avus, dude, glad things turned out alright. We get so much bad weather here, you really should consider a beater for winters. It makes the winter experience much less stressful (if you are like me). Gone are worries about salt, rust, flung salt rocks banging the car, unseen giant potholes, washing the car in frigid weather... the list goes on.

Do your beast a favor... spare her the whole retched experience!

snow in MI too

yes, did the bald snow tires last winter. got stuck on a flat parking lot trying to leave work.

much better this year with the blizzaks, but I keep thinking this is such a waste of the M. you can't use 1/3 of the HP.

Maybe next year I'll get a beater WRX or Audi and just park the beast........

Oh bugger that nonsense. ouich

I run my Pilot Sport All Seasons and I'm doing quite well in our "Arctic Circle-esque" climate.

Tires most definitely can help, but it all starts with who is behind the wheel. I find that winter tires make careless drivers even more careless because "Oh, I've got winter tires, I'll be fine" and they weave around like they would in the summer.
