Does this carfax makes sense? Shows up as one owner. 7/3/2009 it was reported at auto auction but never registered? My question is what could of went on from then to present? Does not make sense to me.

the report isn't that great in the sense that it was in a state that had few reporters and there's a lack of reports - so i couldn't say if it's bad or good...it just sucks those are the only reports

the 2 auctions (reported twice - likely paperwork going back and forth between MA & the new state it went to & finally to carfax) to me it seems like someone went to MA saw that the car was going for cheap and they decided to snatch it up and sell it at their next auction making a couple grand/maybe more by flipping it quick

in all this report doesn't show much - there's 1999 build E39 M5s that have reports with up to 50 records showing every time they showed up to a dealer and had an inspection - etc etc

those are good because they let you cross check with maintenance/repair bills

this report is only good that it doesn't show an accident or some other unwanted event (flood, theft, lemon)

if you want this car get a REAL REAL good PPI and find a dealer who'll give you all the service/warranty records

I agree with John... take it to a BMW dealership and get it inspected... better safe then sorry!

This car is a 50/50 risk. This is th first model year (2006MY) for the E60. You want to look at a 2008MY - 2010MY. Some 06 owners have no problems, some few, some many. You are better off looking for a newer MY, IMO.

I think I am one of the few along with the guy that owned the car before me. I have a 12/05 build and mine hasn't any problems at all. That includes carchex, carfax, ppi, and dealer report. All I had on mine was regular maintenence. It was pretty low on mile so that could have been the case when I bought it. Anyways make sure it's the one you want. Don't buy it because of the price.

for whatever car you buy, CarFax is only a indication tool, ensure you run the VIN at a BMW dealer to check on service records. That way you can see what repairs where done to it. Then a PPI is a must.

In the DC area, i wouldn't take a BMW to a dealership for a PPI, i would take it to a serious Indy place that specializes in BMWs. I know a few in case you want to know.

if your budget can swing it, get a 2008+ M5. 06/07 have had some gremlins.

Ya difference between a 2006 and a 2008 is like 10k. I am potentially stretching my budget to high 30's if I go with a 2006.

may want to wait until 08 prices drop ?

up to you, as others have said, 06s have a higher risk for problems b/c first/second year models tend to have issues, but there are some with a lot, few, or no problems at all.

do your research and find the car that is the all around best value for price, options, and condition (CarFax, service records, PPI).

heres a reputable indy dealership that sells quality used BMWs. They are low key and off the radar in the DC area, but have good cars and a great service department.

http://www.advantagecertified.com/inventory/series.php?series_id=4

They have a nice AW M5 that appears to be loaded with options

Just like the E39 I had a price in mind I was looking to spend and it went up like $10k. When I approached $30K for one I started to consider an E60 as looking I can find a decent one for mid to high $30's and some had warranties as I would not own one without. If I consider a 2008 I am not at minimum $43K.

I still need to drive one again and would like to drive a 2007+ manual.

The Somerset stuff is the original owner, but his DMV does not report mileage to Carfax. Neither do the places he went for service/maintenance (if he went anywhere).

The auction listing is likely the dealer where it got traded in bringing it to his local auction and registering it for sale. Bidding did not get high enough so he no-saled it, and brought it to two more auctions in the hopes he would get bids high enough to hit his reserve. He didn't.

None of that means anything necessarily good or bad. The car could be pristine and he's trying to get retail money at the auction and is unrealistic. Or it could be a shi*tbox and he wants normal auction money for it, and he won't get that either. No way to know.

The only thing missing from this carfax is the event where the dealer took it in as trade or lease-return, but sometimes those show up months later.

If you want help finding a nice M5, with no worries about its history or condition (mechanical or cosmetic), email me and I can help you.

It seems so many cars I see on ebay have very questionable histories. I see cars that appear to be a good deal and the carfax shows an accident. For all I know the car can be perfect and fixed but just rare to see a one or two owner car that has not been through the auction system or have something that stands out.

This is exactly why people hire me to find them their cars. Clean carfax is nice, but means nothing as carfax only catches about 35% of accidents. Carfax is great to rule out salvage, flood, junk, and other title blemishes but it tells you nothing about the actual condition of the car.

Don't be scared of buying a car that's been to the auction. Plenty of beautiful one owner highly maintained cars get traded in or turned in off lease and go right to the auction. And some are crappy. And some private owners have pristine cars, and some have been hit and neglected. My job is to determine which is which, and only get the good ones.

The real problem is that a lot of dealers buy below average cars cheaply, detail them, and put them up for sale at low prices. Then everyone thinks they are pristine cars (because the online ad says it is and a dealer would never lie!) so they expect me to be able to get them a truly pristine car for the price of a lousy car. While I'm good, I'm not that good. At the auction, and everywhere else, good cars get good money, lousy cars get lousy money. You can't get a good car for lousy car money.
