Does the B5/B7 supercharger whine?

Some people say that they have driven a B5 and didn't like the noise of the supercharger whining. Is this really such an issue? I thought the noise was hardly noticeable. Any experiences or comments in this regard....

Really only noticeable with no stereo and on a light throttle (e.g. in varying 10-25mph traffic). Even then it's soft and barely noticeable. Not like in a Jag or something...

Supercharger whine

Dear Ashok,

The radial supercharger whine sounds more like a turbo charger's whine and is only noticeable when feathering the throttle, especially on deceleration. It is the nicest sound in the world...honestly. In a tunnel at 2'500 Rpm's it sounds like a howling V12 on steroids! The car sounds and drives better than the M5! Ashok trust me, it is phenomenal...

Any questions you may have, please feel free to PM me.

Kindest regards,

Moody

Well, it makes lovely sounds most of the time. Mine started going "click...clack" and now it needs a supercharger rebuild! Early design fault that's since been corrected - all the early UK cars have now had the same thing fixed.

It's true, it's more of a faint whistle than a whine - I guess that's because it's a nautilus compressor, like a turbo.

Have to say, I always loved the sound of my old Esprit Turbo, with the blower pushing through twin Dell'ortos - fantastic sounds, but the bloody thing would need a retune every 500 miles!

Mine is almost totally silent both up and down the rev range. Makes a lot more noise from the outside apparently but when you are driving there is just the seamless surge of power pinning your ears back and the NASCAR roar from the engine. Not one passenger has guessed it is super or turbo charged. They just think it is V8 muscle!

My supercharger was changed under warranty very early on and I have no doubt hythe will experience similar levels of noise when he gets his back.

Could just be my younger ears picking up the super-high-pitched whine, David! :)
