My beast had it's MOT on Saturday. The only thing they found was one of the mid mounted exhaust mounts had snapped due to corrosion. The one on the other side is quite corroded too. He passed it but strongly recommended changing the mount(s) ASAP.

I was more than happy to accept this and obediently phoned the dealer this morning to order the offending parts naively thinking that they would only by a few pounds seeing as they were simple brackets. I figured on £20 or so.

I needed to buy:
2 off 18301407091 - upper bracket
2 off 18301407092 - lower bracket
4 off 07119905394 - bolts

I was shocked to find that these cheap, mild steel brackets cost me £75 for the set.:nono:

Now I know that this is an M5 and BMW's are never cheap to repair but this is highway robbery. I'm convinced more and more that BMW hike the prices of parts which are dealer only. I told the stealer he should be arrested and are now getting them made for me by an exhaust specialist.

Rant over - thank you

BMW puts a premium on things and that will always remain true. But they put a higher margin on items that aren't replaced that often due to the small quantity they produce after production runs. Ask for a BMW club discount and then some. :) I have done this and it has saved me a few dollars.

£73 delivered from bmminiparts. They are usually significantly cheaper than dealer prices, but not in this case.

This is what I'm going to do. There is an exhaust fabricator near me that specialises in performance exhausts. Should be water off a ducks back for them

That is not bad. The local BMW stealership charged one of my customers .9 hours to install a set of climate filters on there e39. They paid $115.20 labor to have them installed!

Top Gear? They specialise in expensive quotes too ;)

Guy wouldnt take anything below £80 to replace my OEM with H&S rear boxes... thankfully the guy at HiQ around the corner didnt sniff at my £50 offer :)

Q (also in Aylesbury)

edit: I now just found your car details, and you've been spotted! http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/si...world-you/165118-e39-m5-c3-xxx-aylesbury.html :D

If they are the rubber exhaust mounts just forward of the diff and are under (rather than above the exhaust) then they are available from most exhaust shops or motor factors for about £8 ea (or less).

I discovered the same prices when I found mine were torn but got a new pair for no more than £15, which is closer to the price they should be. Several 5series models use them, ask the people to look in their Timax book.
Ok, not oem but they can't be all that bad and a fresh set of cheap ones is better than torn oem ones!

I've a feeling that the rear box mounts are also available and the would certainly be much cheaper!

The mounts are just to the rear of the cats.

I'll find out how much Top Gear wants. They were quite cheap when I got the 540i cats replaced.

Thanks for the tip at Hi Q ;)

I never begrudge spending money on the car to keep it tip top. I just demand that the price is fair. I don't flinch buying far more expensive items for the car but these brackets are an example of profiteering.

If £75 cause you to fly into a rage over dealer rip off, you will have a long and painful ownership experience.

Pray you never need a vanos solenoid board... 1100 for the one. Never mind hard parts.

I'm not in a rage. Quite mellow actually.
I've owned M's for many years, currently own two, as well as a 540i. I know what the costs are.

I've spent thousands on the M5 without complaining once. The most recent was £1000 for an ABS ECU. Didn't flinch once. £75 for two mild steel brackets that WILL have cost BMW £0.36 to manufacture is plain wrong. I work in volume manufacture. I know the costs.

That's all I'm saying.

Right, then you know that BMW does NOT make these parts in volume- now- and if they did at one time, these are now getting old and valuable. Indeed the overhead on stocking cheap parts is the same as expensive parts. Flat out it will not cost then 0.36 per to make 1000 of those parts, to distribute around the world. Also keep in mind that your local dealer (not "BMW") may be a LARGE factor in that final mark up.

And rage was probably the wrong word, but you get the idea:cool:

mmm. Don't agree totally with that. I buy parts for my E30 M3 convertible which are unique to that model (which is considerably more rare than the M5). The parts are reasonably priced IMO.

jeez , lay off the guy, 75 pounds for an exhaust bracket is a piss take, if you dont even think about that and just pay then the old adage about a fool and his money comes to mind, these cars have enough ridiculously priced parts on them that you have zero leeway on so if he can have one made at a sensible price why not let him do this and save his dough for the really important stuff.
