No, they don't lock unless you lock it by touching the designated area of one of the door handles or by hitting the lock button on the remote.
Not sure if the BMW dealers can do any programming. Through iDrive, you can make minor changes like locking the door after the vehicle starts moving, or make it silent when you lock the doors, etc. The owner's manual does not mention any type of other programming. I was just reading over that section not too long ago! I hope this helps.

I wish the car would lock itself after 20-30 seconds with no key inside.

Also, a somewhat related question...
What is the point of 'Radio Mode Switched On' warning when you shut the car off and open the door?
Is it just to remind you that the radio will stay on until you lock the car? It's kind of annoying.

Two options hit the on/off button twice to turn the radio off as well before locking the car. Or push and hold for a few seconds the on/off button when you want to turn off everything.

Just wondering, what exactly is the designated touch area on the door handle to lock the doors. I'm new to the M5 and have recently looked like an idiot standing next to my car trying to lock the doors by touching the handle. Half the time it works for me, the other half it doesnt.

Designated Area of Door Handles with Comfort Access

Unlocking:
  • Completely Grasp Door Handle, arrow 1.
Locking:
  • For Driver's door, touch the area highlighted in the picture, arrow 2, with your finger for approximately 1 second.
  • For remaining doors, touch the area in the picture, arrow 3, with your finger for approximately 1 second.
You may also open the trunk without unlocking the car by just touching the release button under the trunk lid, and once you close it, there is no need to lock it. the doors and trunk will stay lock since it only gave you access to trunk for the period of the time that the key was detected by the car, and as soon as the trunk is closed and you walk away, it will remain locked.

Awesome, I did not know this, and it works great.

To lock, I just swipe my finger from the keyhole towards the handle and it always works. It would be cool if it just locked itself automatically when I walk away at maybe 10ft from the car.
