need to start making a list...seems like M5 specific parts are starting to become discontinued...

anybody also noticing this from the usual vendors (fcpeuro, ecstuning, etc.) ?

Yes, at least for the e46 m3 too. One of the reasons I'm not going to fcp as often for parts despite the warranty, what's the point if it just gets discontinued in the future.
I'm much more worried about the e6x platform with much less availability and more one off (ionic and other elctrical modules).

This is the primary reason neither will be a daily anymore very soon.
^^^^This 100%^^^^

I have been having good luck recently with bmwpartsdeal.com. They don't offer returns, shipping is whenever it shows up, but I have been able to obtain difficult to find parts at reasonable prices.
With the supply of new cars being almost non-existent, I would think the demand for service parts would increase resulting in a net good for us....but IR engineer not economist.
Vanos solenoids

It makes me think that all the $ I put into this car, and soon won’t be able to use it as much. What’s the point of keeping it?
Natural course of life of every car model. Some faster, some slower.
Only a few will survive and keep running. Others will fall, and become spare parts.

Sorry. Too soon? :)

Be sure to stock up on TP too.
TP? Toilet paper? 😂
One of these threads pops up every few years after they hit the 10 year old mark. Tough to say what to horde and it's also dependent on how much cash you want to tie up. Basically what's your investment risk tolerance? lol
So what is actually not available or a solvable problem? Only one real answer in this thread so far, and I’ll add that I know I’ve seen that throttle actuators are NLA but a guy here recently figured out how to adapt the E46 M3 ones.

I do think about this because to me the M5 is meant to soak up a lot of miles and be repairable, but how much of a worry is it really?

And when those E46 M3 actuators inevitably become NLA.....whole car is DOA. Power steering pumps is another example of dwindling/non-existent stock. I do believe we will be able to obtain aftermarket function critical parts way into the future. However, high quality OE parts supply will become non-existant. We have already witnessed the disparity in quality between OE and aftermarket(even OEM) suspension components. Caring about brand heritage by providing service parts for 20+ year old cars is clearly not a tenable business model.
Vanos solenoids
If you want to buy the boards and solenoids 100% new, sure. Otherwise you can get 3 solenoids out of a used abs unit for like $60 shipped. P/n 34511162291. Details are early in my build thread.

Yeah, that is indeed a pandemic reference.

I’ll suggest that hoarding because of perceived future scarcity is annoying and creates the problem in itself. If everyone buys up all available Vanos solenoids today because they are guessing they may someday need them, some other guy that actually needs one tomorrow is actually the one the misses out. If you guess incorrectly and end up needing a different part in the future other than what you hoarded, then you’ll feel the pain and will miss out.

I feel like there’s always some solution. If there actually becomes a shortage of something that’s really important and necessary, someone will come out with a rebuild service or retrofit. And that’s like worst case scenario.

They made a lot of these M5s. They’re not rare. Let’s not sound like corvette owners. Do what you want, but I wouldn’t worry about it.

Kinda agrea, wonder how much of this shortage all across the board is self inflicted from preventive maintenance overload on good parts to hoarding.
End of the day too, feeling like BMW dropped the ball on durability. Just random stuff disintegrating, breaking or wearing. Wonder how porsche fairs against this stuff.

Ahead of ya. I bought them all that I could find on eBay, 😂 and currently running them in my car. They are so fresh and click so nicely.
I think a few people here had to know before I posted about it but was surprised not to see anyone mention it for others.

Now I understand.
Now I understand.
But spare car is still old parts. Why can’t bmw dowhat Nissan andToyota did for the r32/33/34 and the Supra by producing new parts under their Classic program?
