First of all i'd like to say hello to all of you and to also let most of you M5 owners know that im unbeliveably JEALOUS. Anyway here's my comment/question. I work for a BMW dealer in Long Island/NYC and i personally asked about the waiting list for an M5....if you all wanna laugh continue reading....2 friggin yrs!!!!! Yup 2 yrs. They must be nuts. To enjoy such a wonderfully mastered machine 2 yrs from now, i think i'll lose my desire for it.
I was involved in a car accident a few weeks ago and im coming into some good cash and thats how i plan to pay for it, however my hunger needs to be satisfied SOON!!!! I cant wait all that time....my ques to all of you is--should i put a down deposit on the M3 coming in the fall? Im askin for your opinion based on the way u guys feel about the M5.
A few other questions that i have is how many of you have actually gotten the porsche brakes? How many have removed the speed chip and is it easy? Well i know im full of questions, but thats all for now. Im glad i can be a part of the BMW family/or soon will be. Take care all...

Welcome to the board! As far as the waiting list goes, there are many dealers who have much shorter waiting lists - lists that are only a few months long. Hopefully some people can respond and let you know here the shorter lists are. 2 years is way too long, I would bet you could get one in the Fall with another dealer.

I will pick up my M5 the second week of June. Ive been on the waiting list since January 2000.

Its probably not that far from you.

Good Luck!
Thanks for your comments guys, however something else happens to come into the picture when it comes to going to a dealer with shorter waiting time....ALOT OF $$$$ OVER MSRP. My dealer is offering MSRP price. How many of you know and have heard of dealers asking 10K well over sticker price?? Is the M3 gonna be even worth it? Im personally a big fan of 4 doors and i cant see myself with BMW's new design of the coupe only (for now im assuming). Speaking of which, do they have any plans for coming out with a sedan? Im asking the germans this ques. Even though i should know working for a BMW dealer. By the way....its WWW.HABBERSTADBMW.COM. Anyway thats all for now guys.....

Circle is right in my neck of the woods, but I was afraid they were too small a dealer to be able to deliver in a reasonable time frame. I decided to go the large dealer route and contacted Prestige in Ramsey and went on their list 12/4/99. I just gave my order specs at the end of April, so I probably won't see mine before August. Some times it doesn't pay to get too cute. Good luck with yours!

That's just it - there are dealers who are willing to give you sticker price with no waiting time! You definately need to find a dealership outside the city limits - and probably not on the east coast.

To be honest, I might start by grabbing one of those BMW books that lists all the dealers in the U.S. (you know, the one that comes with the car in the event you need service away from home) and start giving them a call. You are *bound* to find a dealer that will sell you one at sticker and you can probably get it NOW!

If you are familiar with the term "allocation", it explains why a few M5s pop up for sale with a very short waiting period. Some of the higher volume dealers are allocated cars that were not on order. This means an extra unit unspoken for. Typically the dealer will move waiting customers up on the list, but if you are a great customer, they may put you in line where the new allocation falls. It's obviously a very confidential matter so that no one is upset.

New York and Miami are BMWs biggest markets on the east coast. That is one reason the Distribution Center for the east coast is located right between those markets. I would suggest those guys looking in New York get OUT of the city and look in New Jersey, Virginia, PA, etc. Those dealers have shorter lists and may even have an allocated M5 waiting for a happy buyer. I definitely would NOT pay more than sticker. There are enough units floating around that were bought on the speculation market and will be sold at market price. Market price will be heading "south" as the first year's production finishes. While 1750 units sounds like a small number, I have seen ads for new M5s from 79,000 to 99,000 with anywhere from 2 miles to 5000 miles on the cars. Obviously, there's nothing like getting your "own" car, first hand. By the 2001 model year, if no big changes are made to the car, I would expect prices to fall back to sticker in the big markets, and even below sticker in some off the wall places. There's always "that dealer" who wants to move more units in spite of the money. Hopefully BMW will keep production down and limit the number of cars coming here to the US. It makes for a much more desirable car... and happier owners.

I figured the complete opposite. Small Dealer (maybe they try to care about you more because they are smaller)
Also a few dealers I checked wanted $5000 (within 2 months)down/deposit. Circle didnt want anything until they asked me what color etc.
Good luck with yours too Tom

I would have gone your route too, but, when I visited Circle last summer, admittedly late in the 1999 model year, and was inquiring about a 540i or M5, I got the distinct impression from the salesman that they had trouble getting allocations. They were looking for $500 down for the M5 waiting list just like Prestige in Ramsey. Of course, Prestige was "indicating" late 1st early 2nd quarter delivery, while Circle was talking late 2nd. Guess who was closer to the truth, such as it is in the world of car dealers? Anyhoo, Circle will get my car for service, which may prove more lucrative than the sale, judging by oil consumption, et al. BTW, what color combo did you go for? I'll look for it on the Twin River byways. Best. Tom

If you do service at Circle im bound to see you once or twice. I chose Anthracite/Black leather sport. Im just into the darker colors. I deleted the logos as well. Supposedly it was built on Tuesday the 23rd. They say I will have it first or second week of June.

Nitin,

Great minds think alike. I chose anthracite too although I went for the caramel exclusive interior with burl walnut trim. I have black leather now. I like the appearance but it does get hot. Hope you went for the rear sunshades. I went out to Circle early this year to look at an M5 that had just come in. It was carbon black/black sport with titanium trim. Very distinctive! Enjoy. Tom

Cool! IMO anthracite is the best color. Thats the first color that really jumped out at me. I didnt go for the sunshades

I should have (I wasn't thinking about my 5 month old daughter....)
Black leather is the way to go. Lighter colors get dirty faster.
I believe saw that same M5 When i brought my 328i for service
it was sitting in the service area right? Can I get those shades after I get the car?

have a good weekend Tom

Nitin,

I agree light leather gets dirty faster. My wife had tan leather on her Volvo wagon and the kids made short work of it. There'll be no Doritos and Gummi bears in the new M5, nor soccer/baseball car pools either. (I wish.) I wasn't wild about the caramel, but I wasn't going to do black again. Green was a nonstarter and that left imola red. Two-tone's not my thing. I would have done grey (ala the rest of the 5 series) but no dice.

As for the sunshades, I don't know whether they can be added after the fact. I do know that they are only available as an option with extended leather, not all leather -- which is my choice, BTW.

Probably right on the carbon black number. It was in the service bay when I stopped by one evening after work to ogle. It was being prepped for delivery. I got to sit in it anyway. That was almost enough.

Cheers. And happy longgggggggggg weekend.

Nitin,

Dunno. My dealer has been typically vague about specifics. I e-mailed them last Monday (4 weeks after I put in my specs) and received the following response:

"Tom,

Car is in production, they take their time on these. You are
almost there now just waiting for the ordered car. By the way, I just got my
new car which is anthracite and I LOVE the color. Good choice Tom. Keep in
touch."

Gotta love it, right. I'm hoping July at the latest, but the way things have been going August wouldn't surprise me. Love to compare notes once we're both in possession. Know what you mean about convertibles on the Shore. That's why I got my Jeep Wrangler. BTW, remembering from your earlier post that you've got a young one, I was interested to read somewhere on this Messageboard from someone in the UK that the M5s there have "integrated child seats." Can you stand it? Best. Tom

Hey Tom,
I just spoke to my dealer he said the car is ready. I should have my VIN# by the end of the week. That means I could probably have it for next weekend.
Sure thing we can compare notes. It would be great to know an M5 owner nearby, so if either of us have any problems maybe one of us has an answer.
Yes I have a 5 month old daughter. I would love to have those kind of seats ! Wow what a great idea on the M

I will keep you posted
