Chipping For Dummies---BASIC Engine Chipping Questions

1328 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  SC'dKellenersM5
The other day I had to take over for the husband as he was waiting to get his ’03 Mustang Cobra tested and potentially chipped—he had to get back to work.

Anyway, the car had cooled for about 2 hours and when my turn came, I asked if I could sit right beside the person doing the chip programming and monitoring the dyno run so I could watch and ask questions—since I DID’T KNOW WHAT THE HECK I WAS DOING-HA HA. He agreed and they did the first run—Yes I got to see that goofy fan they blow into the front on the car and a real dyno run for the first time.

The car has a few mods—exhaust, pulley, etc and came in at 432. The chip guy then put a chip into cable attached to his laptop and began entering parameters based on his evaluation of the dyno. The main concern was smoothing out the air fuel ratio. Another run was done without total success. The chipper would use a calculator and make many adjustments as I sat there. They got the power to “come on sooner”. Then came the more fine tuned questions, like “at what temp did I want the fan to come on at”, “did I want the default program to be set up with traction off”. Duh, all I could ask he and our tuner were for the pros and cons of each decision. A final dyno was run but the car was deemed “heat soaked”, so test results wold show hp as lower-444hp?

He loved the results—the car is much “smoother” to drive and now the hubby is hot to trot to chip my M5, M Coupe and M3---HELP!!

QUESTIONS:

1) Do they make chips for BMW’s that allow a switch between various programs including the factory program? The mustang has a switch in the glove box that allows you to instantly switch between 5 different programs, including DSC off, factory setting, etc? Sport on would be nice!!
2) What figure is used to reflect what HP is lost due to “heat soak”? What is “heat soak”? Isn’t any car that’s been running awhile heat soaked?
3) What things have you people been programming into your chips? Why?
4) What chip companies do you like and why?
5) Can you change the programs as you need to reflect air temp/humidity and the like at the track for example?
6) Did you remove the governor?
7) Raise the rev limiter?
8) Any other recommendations/tips/precautions from anyone out here?

THANKS VERY MUCH!
Anita

Oh, as I was leaving a Mustang with a big block was getting ready to go on the dyno. I was stand about a car length away when it started up and I swear it made the inside of my chest vibrate. It dyno’d pre nitrous somewhere in the 600’s and 830 or so with the nitrous. Now I know what people are talking about when they run into these kind of cars—how they can feel the power-whew! then cherrsagai

Hey A,

I'll try and give it a chop.

1) I know this can be done with cars that have a physical chip change. They can make a board that has two different chips on it and a sitch to toggle between the two. I don't know that they can do it for cars like the Beast, where there is no Physical chip replacement, only a download.

2) As Every vehicle is different, there is no equasion to reflect heat soak loss. (Best guess, a little bit hiha )

3) Raise Rev limiter (More speed), Raise Idle (Keeps uber clutch quiet), Delimit the speed limiter (To walk away from other beasts at 250 Km/hr), Head snapping throttle response with sport (Just to show off)

4) Powerchip. They have the most avanced system to upgrade a chip. They were the First to crack the Beast when most others said it could not be done. They can look at all parameters. (They use windows based system, whilst most others are still in the stoneage using Dos).

5) Optimum is optimum.

6) Hell YES ! and tested it a few times.

7) Yes, at first I went for 7,450 and loved it. But when I fitted the uber clutch, BMW reset the computer or something and wiped the chip. I felt a little spooked by others so reduced it to 7,300 the same as Dinan. But I never had a problem with either. Just a little paranoid.

8) Control your expectations on the Beast. There is not gobs of Power to be had. The Chip is great bang per buck, but if the ONLY reason you get it is to see a higher Dyno number, you'll most likely be disappointed with a Beast chip. Its more about, smoothness, drivability, raised revs, no limiter and for those with an uber clucth, peace restored.

Caution, Chipping becomes an illness. :haha: I chip everything, I can't help myself.

1. Does power chip modify or program the DME based on the modifications that you have?

2. If so, do you just give them a list and they know what to do from there?

3. If you add a new mod do you have to pay more money to have the DME reprogrammed?

4. Just out of curiosity, what is the biggest dyno number that any one with the S62 has ever put down normally aspirated? Has anyone ever dynoed an E39 M5 with CAI, velocity stacks, cams, headers back exhaust, chip, underdrive pulleys, etc.?

Eric
Powerchips does take into account what modifications that you do have and they adjust variables as needed. As for if you change something, they can change your programming as well...the cost to change would be the shipping to/from powerchips for the ECU or the laptop setup from them.

As for what is the highest NA S62 Dyno...no idea. My car was doing about 425 (converted) with the AA CAI, Dinan stg I (CRAP SOFTWARE), B&B cans with the Xpipe... Im sure that 480 (adding back driveline loss) is where the highest are...

Yeah, I thought my lawn mower needed a chip cause it was starting to really use gas--then I remembered to clean the air filter :D which was totally clogged. It is a Toro self propelled with 6.0 written on it!! Maybe I can push it past 5 mph with a chip :hihi:

Seriously though, thanks to all you guys! What I need to do is start contacting some of the chip makers and see exactly what parameters they can manipulate in the M cars, get sample dyno charts, data, etc from them.

THANKS AGAIN!

Anita
Anita don’t you know better then to discuss lawn mowers around Rob? LOL

Anyway… I’ll PM you Shadowmans number give him a call and he can tell you everything you need to know about engine software. We have done a lot of the board members software and Bill always sets it up for what modifications they have on their Beast.

Your going to love how your car feels.

Sean
108 octane RULES!!!! Wheres josh....

Ya know whats funny, i even tried to contact powerchips about my new 4runner to see if they had any chips for it...they dont and not a single other company on earth has one either. I guess im just going to have to buy a 05 Sequoia ECU and throw that in there, as thats 12hp from the same **** engine.

Rob,
Good luck with your (frustrating) chipping mission. And HA HA I could see me whipping out my mower at the track and filling it up with race gas :hihi:
Anita
well anita, the sickness never stops..i just put in a K&N filter in the 4runner and she sounds pretty hefty under some throttle.

so lets see that 100bucks in upgraded lights, water wetter, synthetic oil change and now a K&N filter..

psss....i also started looking at the TRD supercharger and an exhaust...dont tell anyone.

What Rob, you want me to keep this a secret :haha: :D :haha:
Sorry sorry, couldn't help but tease you. Continued mod luck!!

Anita
Jeeze, see if i ever tell another board member a secret now...
I wanna chip the mower now, do they make fuel injected mowers, I might be in the market, I feel my sickenss has taken a demented turn, Josh

Rob, who are you kidding, supercharge that white thing of yours
J,

this weekend we will do some more mower research for anita....
