"Check Side Lights"? But they're working!

53697 Views 19 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  kmiller7351
The last few days, I've been plagued by an intermittent "check side lights" warning on the LED display. But I walked around the car and couldn't find any lights out. First, does anyone know which lights correspond to the "side lights"? Could the halos/angel eyes be the "side lights"? The lights in the side fenders are just blinkers aren't they (and they work). Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

Did you check the fogs? Of course, make sure switch is on. How about the hard to see license plate light?

Jeff
Check your turn signals, halos(angel eyes) and if you have hid fogs check them also (but most of the check side lights i had before was from the HID fogs which a resistor pack cured it)...
Had the same problem...

Had the same annoying message which came and went intermittenly for 3 months last year. First I thought it was the side markers (door) so I checked the sockets and found the excuse to replace with clear bulbs (even though bulbs were still good). Problem went away for a couple of weeks despite all bulbs still working. When I was at Dinan in December, had them troubleshoot and they found slightly corroded sockets (front side turn signals). They replaced both sides and problem is now history. :applause:
Here's the P/N's
63 12 6 908 408 Socket
63 21 6 931 134 Bulb
Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem and it ended up being a defective Angel iBright. The halos or iBrights are wired to the small corner lights. Do a walk around of your car with just the parking lights on and then with the low beams on when the "check side lights" warning is on. Here's the thread I started a while back.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check all of the items mentioned and also pull the front sockets. These are known problem items so it wouldn't surprise me if one is corroded.
The systems performs a resistance check to ascertain if bulbs have failed, if the bulb is getting old the filament can be worn/almost burned out, it will continue to work but the car will think that it is failing.

At least it will be a cheap fix :M5thumbs:

I have the same issue and it was one of the LED drivers for the angel eyes. I just need to replace the LED driver.

same here, angel eye problem.
My M5 gave me a "Check Brake Lamps" warning intermittently. Turns out one of the bulbs was in wrong. Dealer diagnosed and fixed it free-of-charge.

OK, if the front lights check out, then I'm going there next. But how can you tell if it's an LED driver (do you mean ballast?), and how can you tell which one, if both sides are working?
Loose wire perhaps

Yes, I do mean the ballast for the LED's. I found that when the message appeared that the bad LED side actually went off and the turn indicator came on on the bad side.

You can swap the LED ballasts and see if the problem moves with the bad one. I will tell you that my ballast ended up NOT being bad. The wiring that goes into the socket that pugs into the ballast had a loose wire.

Perhaps Umitza(LED supplier) can give us some help with securing the wires in the socket.

Your problem may in fact be a loose wire if the agel eyes are not going off. Does the message come and go over time? If so, it is most likely the loose wire issue. I still would be willing to guess that one of your sockets has a loose wire, but just a slightly loose wire.

There are four wires into the socket. The red wire is what cause all of my issues.

I had the same problem - it turned out to be a weak (bad) ground for the angel eyes (aftermarket upgrade).

Just had the same message yesterday for the first time and it was my front side amber light... so i hit it, turned the lights off and back on and the message was gone.
Looks like this is only thread on the web regarding this message on E39s.

I installed 55w DDM slim kit into my fog lights yesterday, and now Im having lots of problems. Sad part is that even going back to original setup (disconnecting the HIDs from fogs) the problem is still there :sad1: Granted I havent played with wires/sockets mentioned here yet and it COULD be coincidence, but here's what's happening:

OEM non-AE xenons with eBay CCFL kit connected (not just tapped) to the parking lamps. So the only thing the turn signal does is blink when turn signal engaged, CCFLs replace the parking lamp function.

Well, after connecting the fog light HIDs, my left side CCFL rings wouldn't light up right away. You turn ON the fog lamps ONLY and maybe after 15-20 secs, rings come ON. You switch off-on, rings are out for another 15-20 secs.

Now if I put the lowbeams ON, the CCFL rings go out for good. I can wait 5 mins and they wont come back ON. That happens regardless if the fogs are ON or OFF along with the low beams.

"Check side light" only appears when the lights are off, granted im not sure which ones exactly. All I know that when everything is OFF, the warning comes on.

This morning after a 15 min drive, the right fog light went out and the left one was flashing at a steady "turn signal" rate hmmm Low beams weren't engaged, so the rings stayed ON

Either way, I know that's not enough info and this can probably be solved by trying out things described in this thread, I just hope i can nail it down. Hate when something doesnt work in the car, had nightmares last night :sad2:

I think most of these problems are related to corroded connectors & bulbs because we are dealing with 4-8 year old cars here
well, it turned out to be a bad eBay CCFL inverter :wroom:
My MID displays "check fog light" but both are new and this is an intermittant issue. If my light are set to auto, all lights come on regardless. If the are off i ocasionally get the lamp error. The wiring seems fine but I hooked up a code reader and I get a communication error according to my code book. Any suggestions?

The reason all your lights are coming on immediately when your headlamps are set to Automatic is because you've got your fog lamps turned on. This bypasses the ambient light sensor for the automatic headlamps, and just turns everything on when the ignition is on. You could be parked on the surface of the sun and the lights would still automatically illuminate.

If you turn your foglamp switch off, your auto headlamps will come on when it's dark enough.

As far as your error goes, have you tried a different set of bulbs? Could be a manufacturer defect in one of the bulbs.

Also, to add to this thread, when my driver's side AiB was operating intermittently a year ago, my 'Check Side Lights' warning came up on the dash.
I have changed the one bulb on the right side because I thought the wire was loose but i still get the error msg. If I turn on the fog lights the msg goes out. So my next guess is the connector to the wire. It seems a lettle loose but no loose enough to pull out of the connector. If that fails, I either deal with the error msg or put the stock ones back in.
