Help needed with the following peake code:

I clear all faults and start the engine then switch off. Plug in the peake scanner and always get the following code:

16

Looking at table 18, I find the problem to be:

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 246pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=328 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 246pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 11995" width=328><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 18pt" height=24><TD class=xl22 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #e0dfe3; BORDER-TOP: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; WIDTH: 246pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; HEIGHT: 18pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=328 height=24>"Exhaust camshaft VANOS advance valve, Cyl#1-4"</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I took it to the dealer for inspection; they checked the car using GT1, nothing showed up except for the pre cat sensor.

I also get the following codes using peake scanner:

You have a VANOS problem.

OK, are you sure that you read the code properly? IIRC there are no codes with a 6, what looks like a 6 is really a B. Lowercase b.

If you read the code correctly and the description that you gave is correct for that code, then you likely have a VANOS Solenoid problem. I've BTDT. It's about $550 and if you are a competent DIY then you can do it yourself. At a dealer or Indy it shouldn't be more than an hour's labor.

Best of luck,

Michael

I assume the first readout you get is 18, that is the table, and then successively you are getting all the other 2 digit codes you have posted.

The "6" is usually a "b", I found that out. Check the sticky about "
Peake code information" or similar. It is at the top of each thread.

If the GT1 does not show a VANOs code, then either the GT1 is wrong (possible, not likely) or you are not reading the codes correctly.

Any driving issues, or simply codes popping up? If the latter, could be old codes that need to be cleared.

No driving issues. Car gets into limp mode from time to time. I think I was not reading the codes correctly as member Beemer Guy mentioned. I will have to verify tomorrow if it's b or 6. If it was b then the problem would be

Not sure what those codes are, I have never seen them. I am willing to bet your "6" is a "b". Someone else turned me on to the difference, and even now, it is so close, I have to keep reminding myself.

I am wondering if a random misfire ( low fuel can do it) caused the second code? The limp home mode would bother me, I would think the GT1 would get a stored code for that. Fuel control may be some reading outside a preset value (high or low). Perhaps someone else can help with that.

b looks just like the letter I typed - a vertical bar sitting on top of a circle.

a 6 looks like a b with an additional line across the top (kinda like the 6 in this sentence)

Remember: a b is never written with a line on top, but a 6 can be:

SIX

b

Yes you are right and I like the fact that It was not 16 it was 1b, but can someone tell me what does these codes mean ? what do I need to change?

1b Diagnostic Module - Tank Leakage Switching Valve

I don't know for sure, but I would think it would be related to the pump in the gas tank that pumps gas from the left to right tank.

91 Fuel Control, Cyl #5-8

I would guess this is related to the one above. Perhaps you had a problem with the valve that prevented enough fuel from reaching the engine and caused a fuel metering issue...

Thanks DouglasABaker, I will have to live with it for now since I can't be sure what is causing the problem. I don't want to spend money trying to diagnose the problem :)

I hope its nothing serious or could cause some safety issues.
