I hope someone can come up with a definitive guide to M5 E60 exhaust and put it on top of this forum. I just realized and experienced, exhaust mods are not as simple as one thinks it as a simple bolt on thing.

I only read about ECU mod when the headers are changed. I did not read much in our forum about problems with the sec. 1, sec. 2, and sec. 3.

I changed my stock exhaust to EVOSPORT sec. 1 w/out cats + EVOSPORT sec. 2 w/out resonators + TUBISTYLE RUMORE muffler

1.) Warning! A stern warning to all those who plan to go w/out cats. You will easily wake up the neighbors and rattle your whole street block. Be ready to make new enemies. Words cannot describe how loud - loud can get on an M5 w/out cats and resonators. This is no joke! I watched the YOUTUBE videos and they are nothing compared to the real sound. The car no longer becomes a car. It's ridiculous. People will want to kick you out of the basement mall parking lot. And if you park in the lower basements, its embarrassing to go up all the floors roaring like that.

2.) The car is choking at low RPM -2500 rpm at 3rd gear and 4th gear at 40 km/h. It feels like power is lost. Acceleration is not as crisp as before. This combination of mine, has made it too much free flow. The ECU is not prepared for this. You will hate how the car is at low speed. You will have a headache because the car is not responsive. The car is "shuddering" and "shaking".

3.) Your kids won't be able to sit on the rear unless you want them to go deaf. Seriously, even in the front they are bad for the ears.

I exchanged emails with Simon of Evosport. And he doesn't know why the car is choking and suspects the TUBISTYLE is too free flow for the EVOSPORT sec.1 & sec. 2. Keang24 told me he also experienced this with his Meisterschaft sec.1 & sec. 2 w/ Meisterschaft GT muffler - the choking, hesitation, slow response, etc.

After asking my friends, they have told me most people just change sec. 2 and the muffler. They just leave sec. 1 to make the car more normal and not bother other people.

After talking to many friends and thinking of how to solve my problem. Here is my decision:

1.) Put back my original M5 exhaust (sec. 1 & sec. 2) and cut out the original muffler (sec. 3) and replace it with the TUBISTYLE RUMORE. I think this should be loud enough for a more practical and real world driving experience.

2.) When my friends decide we will go for a fun run out of town. Or blast through a long stretch highways, I will ask my staff to go to the muffler shop one week before the scheduled fun run and remove the original M5 sec. 1 & sec.2 and replace it with my Evosport sec. 1 w/out cats & sec. 2 w/out resonators and TUBISTYLE. It only cost $20 here in the Philippines to remove and install the exhaust. So that will x2 = $40.

So now, I think I can have the best of both worlds. :1:

I still hope someone will take the time to compile a definitive guide to the M5 exhaust. And outlining and comparing all the different exhaust combos out there.

I think its just your particular setup that has caused you problems.
I have the race pipes section 1 from evosport with Evosport section 3 Sport muffler. In fact, car feels stronger, especially midrange.
I believe the ASR exhaust is also catless, and thats showing hp and tq improvement.

PS: My car is nowhere near as loud as an Eisenman Race muffler by itself. Also no drone whatsoever. You might want to try putting the resonator back only.

Yes, either try to put resonators back or 2nd cats back and see how the car respond. With no 2nd cats/resonators, I assumed you should feel strong at the top end, right?

Here is my old thread about choking experience with similar exhaust setup to yours: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=95148&highlight=choking. Back then I didn't even have headers installed yet.

It worst when I have headers, no 2nd cats/resonator, and race muffler. The engine felt bubbling at low end, but pull harder at top end though. Even when I put stock 2nd cats/resonators, I still experienced some lagging/choking until I have ecu remapped. The throttle response more aggressive after ecu upgrade.

Dear Kwan,

I'm defenitely sure the EVOSPORT sec. 1 w/out cats + EVOSPORT sec. 2 w/out resonator + TUBISTYLE RUMORE is not a good combo. Better go for an all EVOSPORT setup.

I'm also planing to try the stock M5 and EVOSPORT setup combos with my TUBISTYLE

I'll keep you posted on further developments....

When you say ECU remapp. Is that for your particular setup? Or the ECU remapp will be for all setup.

I'm planning to get the ECU mod. But that wasn't tested on my particular EVOSPORT sec. w/out cats + EVOSPORT w/out resonators + TUBISTYLE RUMORE.

So ECU MOD from ESS will help my setup even if it was not tested on my setup, right?

I think all ecu remapped are generic, but don't take my words for that. The only thing that different(usually) between stage I and II is rear o2 sensor disable for Headers. Tuner may claime or add some special tune/spices to distinquish their product from others. BUt so far, don't expect much power gain, but rather "drivability" improvement. That's for sure. I love my ESS and so far no negative comments about their performance.

That answers my question. I was thinking they were GENERIC.

Thanks KEN. I feel lucky to have met a guy like you who knows "his exhausts"

Right now I'm no longer looking for any HP gains. I just want the good old driving feeling of the M5 back.
