Boston-NY Meet - DISASTER! I'm so MAD!(long)

I am so mad at the irresponsibility of everyone who drives a BMW. We have the worst reputation of car drivers because we deserve it. We are careless on public roads, causing road rage among other motorists, often creating a hazardous situation. That said, I will NEVER participate in any group gatherings that involves caravaning on a highway. The only way I will see the Boston gang will be at a get together in a park or at a restaurant.
That said, now I will tell you what happened.
We met at 9:00am at a designated spot to head to CT for our meet. There were approximately 11-12 cars. We caravaned on to I-95 to head to our destination. Now I don't have anything against a little spirited driving given the conditions. But today, I was simply disgustedgrrrrrrr . People are driving 85-100 MPH weaving in and out of traffic. I saw at least two cars giving us the middle finger (and deservingly so)
About 95 miles into the journey (at the CT-RI state line) my Escort 8500 signals a Ka band. I immedialtely slow down, and flash my lights at the car in front of me to do so as well (Chazzy). The other drivers decide to floor their cars. about 1/4 mile later I see a cop under the overpass. I was already doing 65 ( as was Chazzy). But the other cars (I guess they did not see the cop) continue doing 85-100. Everyone is way ahead, except for Chazzy and I. A few minutes later, a cop car comes from behind, slows down and takes a look at me, then drives ahead and does the same with Chazzy. Then her (yes it was a female) lights go on and she signals to both of us to pull over. She was very polite and approaches me and tells me that at least 4 people had called the SP on their mobile phones complaining of irrespnsible driving by a group of "brats" driving BMWs. I explained to her that I am not an irresponsible driver (as I have never gotten a speeding ticket) and it was a simple case of mistaken identity. She asked where we were headed. I told her I didn't know and I was simply following the group of friends to somewhere to have lunch. She believed me and said to be very careful driving because ANYONE speeding will get a ticket and/or arrested. She also said "Your car does tempt you to speed but resist it":) She was very polite, and let us go.
As I get back onto the highway lane (95 miles into the journey) I decided to simply turn around and drive back home. It is just not worth it:crying: Life is too precious and we take alot of things for granted. It is very easy when you have a group of cars to get a little crazy, and I don't want to put myself in that situation ( and I NEVER will:eek: .
So to everyone who went to this event, I hope you had a good time, but for Fu**'s sake don't drive like an A$$hole. You will ruin the fun:byee55amg

I felt this exact same way after I went on a motorcycle ride with a group of people after a meet. These guys were insane doing 140 on twisty residential roads, passing cars on hills while doing wheelies etc...

I turned around at the first light and went home.

You are very right..... life is way too precious for this kind of idiotic behavior.

I think we discovered the same thing during our wine country run (and poor Barry's car suffered) - large groups of guys doing 150 or so in a single lane road with Fred passing on the left at 170ish.

From then on, we haven't had a spirited drive. I think this is a learning experience for everyone, and I'm glad that there aren't any incidents so far (we'll hear the rest later whne they come back) - and I'm sorry it ruined your day.

If you'll notice, the NorCal group really hasn't gotten together since, especially in such numbers. Maybe it's scheduling, maybe it's the original guys disappearing, but there just isn't that vibe anymore. I hope your crew doesn't face the same problem later on.

Goosh! That's Horrible. Before any large group gets together for a drive, the rules must be understood to obey the law (within reason), be COURTEOUS, and to not hog the road for those unfortunates that may be on the same road with you. What a way to give us all a bad name. A pack of wild dogs, taking chances, being rude, and all going way too fast is not a good thing. This is why BMW drivers are considered snobs and why their cars get keyed. This image sets a reputation for us all.

Rezf,

I'm sorry to hear what happened. For the record, it wasn't me! ;) I wasn't able to go today because of an impending economics exam (summer school  ) that I need to prepare for. So at the last minute I decided to goto the library instead of the meet.

In the end, I'm glad nothing happened, BUT the potential is always there whenever we get behind the wheel, and it's easy for some of us, myself included, to forget the real dangers involved with irresponsible driving.

You know what the problem is? The M5 is just too much fun to drive fast! ;)

Hopefully people will be more careful next time.

The drive up for the NY crew was not so successful to say the least. Testosterone kicked in. I'll leave it to those that were driving to post their thoughts and comments. Nonetheless, it was very worthwhile to meet with NY and Boston members from the messageboard.

Pictures will be posted up shortly...

hmmm
don't think it was us either.... Jim and I were at the front of the pack, but pretty much cruised at 75mph all the way after Providence till we got to the park.... we were driving pretty slowly following traffic in the right lane 'coz of the previous warnings of CT state troopers...
From what Chazzy told us, the state trooper was informed that there were two BMWs, a blue and a black one who were racing or something, and I don't think any of us had those two color cars paired up....
I don't think you should get upset with this incident, as it was just bad luck... all the Boston guys are getting pretty mild about driving on the highway these days compared to the previous meets, where everyone was doing 120+mph....
As always be safe driving and no crazy stuff whenever driving in a large group.... :)

Rezf,

Sorry you got pulled over today! Five of us pulled into the park just a couple of minutes behind Jim and Terence. We had a easy ride down, no one did anything crazy (and no one flipped us the bird or had to take any evasive action on our part). :cool2:

It was great to meet the other board members. Good turn out! I think the count was 16 M5s and another 8-9 nice cars.

WHAT FUN!!!!

We had a good spirited drive up to CT. Nothing dangerous but a bunch of us got tickets.:eek:h:

It was great meeting you all!! Can't wait to do it again!

Yo Dan - That's my story and I have four witnesses! Tfung's G-powers are truly loud, we could hear him a good 3/4 mile in front of us sometimes, or was that Jim????

Just wanted to add my 2 cents:

I am certainly guilty of more than just a spirited driving today..... I agree with you....we should take it a "little easier" than we do. But it is the dynamic...of meeeting up with people on the board....appreciation for the cars.....and fuel injected fun (and in my case....supercharged ;) )

Lasy NY/NJ meet we went on.....speeds were in excess of 140 mph.....but by no means wreckless....it was jjust a matter of the roads we were taking.

I think it would be good to lay out the "rules" in some sense...because it is a reflection on you ..the way other members in your "group" drive...and in some cases ...you may incur an expense such as a speeding ticket ( "it wasnt just me!!!!" hiha ).
And I want to give my appreciation to DrJim and BlueMax.....while by no means at the back of the pack.....they definitely "cooled things down" when things got a little congested.

The other part of this...it would be a good idea to avoid major interstates. On the way back, Young, Max, Jim, Sean, Rakesh, and myself took Merrit Parkway...and had nice "spirited bursts" of driving.

I agree....we can still have fun...going less than 120mph. Ok ok....going less than 90mph.

I agree that in a group of more than 3 cars, going through traffic is a bad idea. Most of my group are talented drivers and are quite safe. I don't expect the lady in her Camry to know or understand. If I had a dollar for every bone-headed move other cars make at under 50 mph I'd be richer than Bill Gates. We do not purposely cut people off or put them in danger despite what they may think. Our cars are quite capable and so are we. That being said, I wish we could show more restraint than we do. Considering the miles we've logged, things have been great. We need to exercise better judgement than we did today on 95. We deserved those tickets.

Reza:

I am so sorry to hear about what happened. I can't beleive they pulled you and Chazzy over as we were only doing about 75. I actually felt the driving was a bit calm today which is a great thing! The only time I think I got stupid was with that damn Acura. That guy was a jerk. I think we all need to remember that things happen fast at high speeds and that we do need to be more courtious(sp) to other drivers. A thank you wave is indespensible IMHO. Please do not let this keep you from getting together with us again.

I guess we were somewhat "spirited" in our driving and deserved those tickets. But man oh man, those cops left the scene of an accident where a guy lost three fingers and the last one hadn't been found yet - all in order to chase us down. Priorities? Oh well I guess the CT PD has to earn a living somehow.
I agree that we should in the future behave ourselves on congested roads. I also believe that a huge caravan like ours would attract attention at any speeds thanks to "profiling" and we should all be aware of this, as Reza experienced. So guys, please lets just all be careful, I do not doubt the capabilities of our cars neither of all of us, however it doesn't take much to cause an accident; trust me during my time as an EMT I saw my share. Be careful and safe. All in all it was great meeting up with everyone.

Hmmmm, how come we didn't think about bringing a scanner with us? Next time guys!!!

Seriously, most of us played safe today. We had a few short "bursts" if you will, but nothing that put anyone in any kind of danger. Those 1??+ runs that both Alfy and I had were when the roads were clear of traffic.

I've gotta say that I agree with Rez...I wasn't there today, but I avoid the meets because of things like this. Don't get me wrong, I'd be the same way, which is partly why I don't go. Get with a group of friends who are driving the same (or faster) machines than you, and you want to have a little fun. I can undersatnd that....but the roads are SO congested, its possible something is gonna happen. And it did. Ticket central. Fortunately that was the ONLY problem.

Everyone is reponsible for their own behavoir. It's just too bad that these meets can't take place without the poor driving.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like grandpa here, but you really gotta get out on the track to enjoy these machines...the highway (especially I-95 of all places, SHEESH!) is not the place to do it.

-Chris

P.S. I hate 95 too :)

I definately agree with you, you were right heading back to Boston. As I had mentioned before, these kinds of crazy driviing will not be abandon. So next time, maybe less driving for everyone. Sorry didn't show up, I had the same excuse as ALX. Too much work. Anyways Boston gangs, should we setup a World Cup meet instead? A 2am meet..hahah

Harry,

I had a scanner set on the CT highway frequency & got nothing, nada, zip about the police action. It could be the suction cup antenna I'm using.

We'll take a ticket over an accident any day.

Be safe out there. :byebye:
You are always prepared Max!! Really, nothing off the scanner huh? Well, I can't see myself going on another group drive on I-95! :crying:
