I'd like to gather a list of BMW M5s/540s in Australia.

We seem to be a bit all over the place at the moment and I keep seeing the guys in the States finding each other over the general forums and it makes me jealous. haha. If someone lives around the corner from me I'd definitely like to know. I've had some email chats with some of you guys but then more of you pop up. Australia was a tiny market for the M5 and it's hard enough seeing another M5 on the road, let alone finding who owns it.

I'm just asking for some simple details like car year model and what area you live in and we can go from there.

I'll start.

I'm quite frequently in that area. Was it a week day or weekend? My Missus drives the car during the week and I would normally be found prowling around in it on weekends. Here is a current pic.

That's the one! Except there was no camera mounted on the back windscreen. It was a weekday; I was buying a replacement office chair after my old one died ......

Very nice, Sir!

That explains why I can't recall seeing your car as I wouldn't have been driving.
Thanks for the appreciation!

No dramas. I've only had the Beast for 5000km, and haven't chosen a mechanic yet. I want to find someone who knows E39 M5s inside and out. I intend to change the oil every 5 to 10 000 kms, and fix a couple of niggles (Nav upgrade to Mark IV, iPod integration) but don't know who I can trust. Mark at Motorworks in Rosebery was suggested to me by one of the Diagnostic Techs (one level down from Master Tech) at BMW Rushcutters Bay, but I haven't been over the bridge to see him. Apparently he owns an E39 M5. Have you guys got any recommendations?

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd add my name to this as well. I've been a bit out of the loop on M5 things lately with work being busy, so the beast's been resting in the garage and I've been off the forum. But I've got a Carbon Black M5 (5th ever built in right hand drive / 1st ever built for Australia). It's got a red / black interior and 170,000kms - living in Double Bay.

I'm about to get a lot of tidying up done at Panel One at Alexandria. They are a very reputable BMW panel shop, and I'm having both full sides resprayed under insurance due to some minor damage when it was parked. So I'll throw in some extra cash and get the front bumper / bonnet done too to get rid of some stone chips, and possibly more depending on the final quote!

Hi all
I'm a newb. Just recently taken ownership of a sapphire black 2006 E60 M5 with 50k km on her. Located in eastern suburbs of Sydney. I'm also keen to hear of any positive experiences with service places around here. Would rather steer clear of the stealers whenever possible.
Cheers

Welcome and congrats on the purchase.

I pop down to Sydney BMW here and there to get small things from their parts dept. and have taken my 135i there for a service once. It was only a minor service and set me back around $250.

I can tell you to avoid Foxman Auto in Randwick. I would never take my car there again nor advise anyone to go there.

And for the million dollar question. What's first on the modification list?

Another welcome, this time from Melbourne.
Make yourself familiar with the M5board and get a code reader.
Stealers are notorously expensive, replacement parts are hideous, whole assemblies replaced instead of bit parts and faults fixed by a process of elimination that ends up costing '000's...
My mate with an E60 M5 had a gearbox warning light, stealer replaced clutch $6K no fix, gearbox $20K (offset by BMW Australia) no fix, then ECU module $7K and finally ok. May just have been a sensor all along...
Cheers.

Hi Ben
My wife's still recovering from the original purchase (it needed a few bits & pieces done straight away) so I may need to take a breather before going down the mods path. I've also got another wallet lightener coming up with a probable CCC replacement. The I-drive screens gone blank and my research points to the CCC which is going to set me back over $3k. Hope I'm wrong but I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks for the tip about foxmans - I can give a wrap to a service guy at brookvale, named alastair from bromspec. When I first got the car he did a service and brake pad for me and was reasonably priced. He also seemed to have a passion for BMW's and has the diagnostic machine that plugs into the car computer. Nice bloke. Unfortunately brooky is a bit of a trek so I'm keen to find something a bit closer to home (maroubra). I'm always a bit reticent to go to the stealers unless I have to but $250 for a minor service seems (unusually) cheap. You're not married to the dealer principal are you :)
Cheers.
