I have a 01/02 production car. I need to know what all I need to get to add bluetooth. I just purchased a Siemens SK65 blackberry phone which I need for work...I've tried searching but I'm sure someone would be able to tell me EVERYTHING I need to get in order to make this work. Thanks in advance.

I think you can get a factory BT kit for an 02 model year. If not, there are kits that integrate the factory ulf. I used a kit for my 6/00 production car from bimmernav.com I do not think the blackberry is necessarily supported by bmw, so it's a bit of a crap-shoot if it will work or not.

Stealer says i need part #'s:

84 11 0 390 318 Bluetooth Control Module (E39 from 9/2000 to 2/2002) $ 255.00
84 13 6 924 547 Installation Kit (Control Module Bracket-needed for sedans w/navigation) $31.50

Anyone able to verify or advise otherwise. Also, the car has the factory timeport phone right now (don't know if that makes a difference or not)

as long as the phone and/or phonebook functions work w/the car, i'm ok. blackberry would be a plus, but i don't need it.

Bimmernav.com is THE site for PN info (IMHO)

I'd really stay away from the dealer for recommendations... or temper that with info from the above site. The partnumber you have doesn't look like any of the 5 generations of BT modules.

84.11.0.390xxx looks like a radio or Sirius part number.....

Hello,

Have you made progress with your Bluetooth phone installation ??

I just bought a 2002 M5 (production date 10/01) and would like to upgrade to Bluetooth phone/system also and have all the existing functionality and more of the BMW integrated phone system. Presently I have a Motorola StarTac phone. No service yet, so its useless.

What are my options ?

Where do I start ?

I kind of like the Motorola RazR V3 phone.

Will the RazR work with my car ?

Which phones have other board members used and what is your experience/cost ?

My goal is best reception/clarity and functionality. I need not be picky about which brand phone.

Thanks,
GR

with the 01/02 prod, you would need to purchase the aftermarket harness from either Martin @ Bimmernav or from TVonNAV as the pre 03/02 cars are not prewired for bluetooth.

Electronics??? They are quoting you the wrong parts. Since you have an 01 that's wired for the CPTs, get the install kit from bimmernav and purchase just the bracket and the ULF from the dealer. I also have a spare replacement tray which is supposed to cost $100 from dealer but since it's a spare, I want to get rid of (it is part of the install kit). PM me if you want it.

They are selling you a crappy, buggy, old, first generation module for 495

Bimmernav has a lot of good info- pretty dense stuff- just awkward to read, understand and navigate, but useful
I highly recommend bmwnav.com for the info you need.

On the BT module version - be careful, as others have stated. There have been many (>5) revisions since BT came out. This leaves lots of older modules around that the dealers want to get rid of. You will need to insist on the latest module for an E39 - there are no compatibility issues between the modules.

Check the archives here:
http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/bluetooth/

You should find all the info you need there. Also, Martin from bmwnav.com frequently monitors the posts there. I got everything I needed for my '00 for ~$600.

And as others have said - don't believe the dealers! They seldom have a clue, as few people would spend the money to do this through a dealer. The forums contain posts from people who have actually done the upgrade ;)

Thank you chrisj and others for the feedback and info.

I have learned :

Avoid the dealer
Work with bmwnav
Target Cost $600-$700

Now my next dilemma is which BT phone to choose.
I have read good things about the Motorola e815
and not so good things on the Motorola RazR.

Feel free to share your BT setup and phone.

Thanks,
GR

I am considering a GSM phone with BT and was looking that the black V3 razr

(Currently use a GSM+TDMA+ANALOG, but this may be terminated...)

What have your heard negative about it?
I think the Razr is fairly compatible. I have a Moto v551 on Cingular, which works great, including phone book transfer.

A word of caution - If you use Verizon, they cripple the BT in their phones due to piracy concerns. Here's a page about compatiblity of various phones:
