Just came back from holidays to a bit of a shock, put the M5 in to BMW for a bit of a problem I have had with selection of 3rd Gear, yikes the GEARBOX HAS GONE, agreed the replacement along with the dashboard due to pixel loss, now that have finished that they decide to check the car out and the real expense has started, rocker cover gasket needs replacing, engine mounts, hydraulic steering hoses sprung leaks, diff mounts need replacing, oil sender needs replacing, brake discs and pads need replacing, a lot of money to be spent, I am in catch 22 if I dont spend it I would not be able to sell it, but I dont want to sell it so I have to have the work done, not much change from $20,000 in total given the go-ahead and just trying to work out if I can keep it from the wife.
Any ideas for uprated brake drums or should I just stick with replacing the originals?

There are no brake drums never were. But if you want to upgrade go with stoptech.

BMW quoted me 8,000 dirham (just a smidge over $2000) for the discs and pads plus labor, is there any better replacement options for around this price?

things like that can take all the joy of owning an M5 right out
get a second and a third oppinion
in many cases to change some things is a good idea but not an immidiate requirement ....

find a good SA and work out a plan with him of what to change and when ... some things can difinitely wait ... I bet!

2g's is out of line, the stoptech front kit with calipers, pads, lines, rotors, are 2500, why not just upgrade for 500 bucks more.

Actually, BMW of Mountain View quoted me $1,800 for front rotors and pads alone when I complained about my shimmy. So $2k in his part of the world may not be totally out of line.

Inde. shops will always be more cost effective in pure mechanical work, like pad and rotors. But if it comes to electronics and real engine diagnostics, the dealers have license to steal.

willM5ad,

How many miles on you car? what model year?

No true....there are brake drums in the rear for the emergency brake - tucked inside the rear rotor .....but I know what you meant ;)

That is an aweful lot of things wrong at once...ummmmm...doesn't sound right. Thats one tough bill to swallow.

I don't think I have ever heard of this many thing s going bad at the same time on an M5. I agree with everyone that a second opinion at a minimum is worth while.

Will,

What year and milage, please?

Gearbox - are they positive it is not just in need of adjusted linkage, new mounts or a new arrester ball?
Instrument cluster - happens to 100% of the cars
Brake rotors - consumables
Brake pads - consumables
Hydraulic steering hoses - never heard of those leaking before, but better fix it ASAP
Rocker cover gaskets - happens, better fix it.
Engine mounts - when you fix it the engine will be more quiet
Oil sender - is it the oil pressure switch or the oil volume sensor?

Wife - she will find out sooner or later anyway. They always do, I think. Better just tell her straight.

I´ve heard from people in KSA there is a cost-effective (compared to Jeddah) BMW service in Bahrain.

Does Will mean the stuff will cost almost $20k to fix? That is crazy.

$4-5k for the gearbox. $2k for pads and rotors. Perhaps $3-4k for the rest.

That should not make it anywhere near $20k.

99, dont take my car as a typical example, bought it quite cheap and now has 175,000km on the clock, owned by the top sheikhs personal protection unit before I had it, cat's cut out ecu remapped etc, had a hard life, I was stupid enough to allow non-dealer mechanics at it - saving money - not!
Quite a lot of things to be done aside from the list I mentioned, I am lucky in that I have a good friend working with the dealership so my price has been dropped today to around 23,000 aed, ($7,000) including labor and of course the warranty on the gearbox. Excluding the rotors I will wait and go for the stoptechs in the future.
Thought long and hard about the costs, but my car goes like the proverbial off a shovel when running well, and is a beautiful example body-wise and interior with all the bells and whistles as per the individual, so I decided to shell the money out, if I sold the car I would get nothing for it in the previous state and I really love the car so everything is relative I guess.
How could I buy a car that hits 100kmh in the mid 4 secs and in which I have personally sailed past a CL55AMG at 285kmh (on the speedo)? And the sound.........swwweeeet. As you can assume I run it hard, nothing like a 10 mile straight of new tarmac in the desert on the Liwa road with no speed cameras, well who wouldnt?
Just do it bro, you wont regret it I guarantee it. Dont forget also that I live in the Middle East and it is not so easy to get the parts, BMW had to fly the gearbox in for me. They said they had never had a gearbox replaced on an M5 before...... that made me feel quite special.........not!:crying2:
Who said the wife will understand? Ermmm she still thinks it is a 4 door family car since I traded the 850 for it a year ago:M5thumbs:
Some things they need to know and some things they sure dont need to know believe me!

Are there no specialists in Abu Dabi? BMw charge extortinate prices for everything.

Have you thought about sourcing parts from outside? I think you only pay 5% duty for personal items which isnt too bad.

The problem is if I buy from outside then BMW will not cover the parts under warranty so Catch 22

Why not try Tony Edwards or the X garage in Dubai and get a quote on the repair as far as labour is concerned. You still will have the warranty on the parts as they are approved by AGMC.Oem rotors shouldn't cost you more than 1000 Dhs each get the pads from DaveZ.

Hey Dunerider, good to hear another M5er on here from UAE, I get significant discounts on parts from ADMotors, been to Tony Edwards in the past knew him in Kuwait, but a long way to travel from Abu Dhabi to Dubai for labor, also he is not a fully authorised BMW service centre, or so he told me about 9 mths ago, although that may have changed recently.

Hey Dunerider, do you know if the alleged new speed limits between Dubai and Abu Dhabi are effective/legal right now, it was reported in the gulf news that the motorway limit had gone up to 160 kmh, I drove from Abu Dhabi at that speed and didnt pick up a ticket, but on another journey to Al Ain I got a ticket (I understand there is an enforced 100km limit alongside some palace). Sure gets the journey time AD - DBX down to well inside the hour.
Think I will check the police website and see if my average 400AED a month speeding tickets have been logged:byebye:
