Hi. I'm planning on getting an E39 M5 in the new year.

Can someone please tell me:

  • what the service intervals are?
  • When is the major one due?
  • What is the average cost for a service on these M5s in the UK?
  • What is the average cost of a major service in the UK?

And last but not least, are there any specialist classifieds I should be checking when looking for the E39 M5s?

Yeh thanks but unfortunately can't find the answers to those questions in the FAQ. Downloaded the M5 Owner's manual and the Maintenance section talks about Inspection I and II, but does not mention when they are.

But it mentions that BMW Maintenance System will tell you by your driving style? Does that mean its different for every car? What happens if I plan a long road trip (London to Edinburgh) and the BMW Maintenance System light comes on!?

Service interval depends on your driving style but is not that different to most other cars (~ every 12-15k or thereabouts). The instrument cluster has 5 green lights that go out progressively to show when the next service is due. The theory is that lots of cold starts and short journeys, an/or hard driving will make them go out quicker, while lots of steady long runs will make them go out slower.

Services go Oil Sevice -Insp 1 - Oil service - Insp 2 and repeat. Insp 2 is the most expensive. So you need to check the car's recent history to see what is coming up for you to pay for. Inspection 2 is the biggest one but it's only due every ~50k. or 4 years.

Cotswold BMW do a good deal - Insp 1 for about £300 I think, and Insp 2 for about £520. But depending where you are there are plenty of specialists who can service the M5. Phil Crouch at CPC in Rickmansworth gets consistently good reviews and thats where I'm likely to go with mine.

Regarding a long trip, it's unlikely to take you by surprise as long as you've been taking notice of the lights on startup. So I wouldn't worry about getting stranded in need of a service!

Patience, grasshopper! It takes a bit of time to learn things about these cars!

One of the reasons why we discuss all of those things is that newcomers have plenty of information readily available when using search!

If the SES light comes on, then you bust out the Peake tool and pull codes. BTW, the Peake tool should be the first thing that an BMW owner should buy (after gas, of course).

From there, searching will be that much easier. Of course, you should reset the codes first and then see which ones come back because you may have old codes stored.

There are tons of info on there and all it takes is a bit of searching. Use proper keywords on the search function and you'll find it!

If there was less banter and more straight replies then maybe the search function would work better :dunno:

This is a forum, not a database; banter is inevitable.

The biggest problem against search is that people don't always use proper keywords in the titles of their threads. So one isn't so inclined to click on them if the keywords don't seem to match.

So, for instance, if I was searching for "inspection II" and saw "basic info needed" instead of "basic info needed about Inspection II and service intervals," then I might pass it by.

Please use the SEARCH function properly and you will learn a lot more about these cars.

Took me a whole 5 MINUTES to find the following......

I searched: "Inspection intervals" or "maintenance intervals"

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e6...-old-school-maintenance-schedule-our-m5s.html

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...162089-preventative-maintenance-schedule.html

If you can convert USD to what ever currency you use, then some of these will works just fine....

I searched "costs of ownership"

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/130711-true-cost-ownership-attachment.html

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...552-would-you-share-your-ownership-costs.html

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...real-cost-ownership-my-m5-figures-inside.html

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/150413-shocking-bmw-parts-prices.html

Edited.......

Just for you Diny....
