Avin Android Head Unit Install (plus new amp)

My MKIII unit is starting to get worse. Reboots are fairly frequent - GPS maps claim CD isn't inserted.
I like the idea of a unit replacing the stock screen with buttons and rotary volume control.
I do use the OBC for things like distance to empty, and average economy display.
Currently I have deleted the DSP amp and installed a fairly decent 2.1 setup with HAT, Alpine DSP, Hertz Amp, JL sub.
As I am going directly into the radio CD analog in - music doesn't stop when the screen reboots - so it really isn't a big annoyance.
I have steering wheel controls, and the volume works. I can mute the volume quick by pressing on the volume button.

I've had an Android phone for about 1.5 years now.
I contemplated doing an Android Tablet and just giving up on the OBC features.
Problem is - I haven't really found a decent off-line map/gps application that will show me a proper 2D moving map showing me location with any decent level of detail.
Then there is the whole user interface issue - having something work nice with physical home/back, and volume buttons accessible.

I think with iOS CarPlay development, or Google's Autolink - eventually there will be a nice intuitive interface that allows operation without getting too distracted. I don't think it's there yet.
Sticking with stock android and having an open source development community similar to what we see with the XBMC might be really nice.

I guess I could get myself an Android tablet and start playing - problem is I see a sinkhole amounting to 100's of hours on something that really isn't that important.
I can get myself a standalone GPS unit with offline maps, traffic re-routing etc. that for most trips works much better than the google/waze, smartphone/tablet offerings. Problem - looks like crap. Theft magnet?

I currently have the IPOD working - so that isn't an issue.

I just miss my moving map display. Google maps will only keep the display on and updating the maps if it is in navigation mode. Really stupid.
The latest version of Google maps has the feature of having the maps go blank after a period of time - but directions continue. Hardly useful for visual cues.

I commend the companies that are offering products for vehicles that haven't been manufactured for over 10 years.
Looking at the videos for the AVANT-2 series, the UI lag time is just so painful compared to modern tablets.
Then there is the whole issue about sunlight readability of the display.

So many choices - not enough time.
